BuzzerQuiz is a not-for-profit association that runs quiz tournaments in the United Kingdom.
The organisation formerly known as British Academic Quiz Tournaments (BAQT) addressed the first drawback for four years, by organising tournaments comprising 20-minute matches (using the familiar format of starters on the buzzer followed by bonuses) which any student could take part in for as many years as they remain a student.
Starting in 2002, the same organisation known as BuzzerQuiz began addressing the second drawback, by running the same sorts of tournaments for anyone, student and non-student alike, who wants to take part.

Rob Linham - British Quizzing FAQ
The BuzzerQuiz Quiz Glossary - this built upon the Oxford glossary, and is more comprehensive but slightly less humorous.
BuzzerQuiz (www.buzzerquiz.com) does exactly what it says on the tin: runs buzzer quiz tournaments in the style of University Challenge.
They organise the annual British Student Quiz Championship, and also the BuzzerQuiz Championship Circuit, which is an ongoing series of tournaments open to all quiz teams.

 BuzzerQuiz - BuzzerQuiz scoresheet
The BuzzerQuiz scoresheet is designed to make keeping score as easy as possible, even if you've never done it before.
It should be used for all games played to BuzzerQuiz rules - and you can download it for free here.
You can download, print, copy and distribute this scoresheet freely for non-commercial purposes, whether for BuzzerQuiz events or not, so long as you don't modify it in any way (except for filling it in, of course!).

 National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC
For each tournament, the small team of BuzzerQuiz writers edit an NAQT Invitational Series set of questions, removing the U.S.-oriented content and replacing it with questions on equivalent British subjects.
For the 2003-04 season, BuzzerQuiz will also be pioneering trash and packet submission tournaments in Britain, in a "quiz weekend" in Oxford in November.
There will also be a mirror of the NAQT ICT, which will allow British teams to get used to the difficulty of the questions and the differences in the rules of the game, in the hope of inspiring more British success at the tournament itself.

OUQS - The Varsity Match - Reports   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Cambridge took an early lead in the game against Oxford reserves, but the Dark Blues were having none of it, and a spate of inspired 15s brought them back into contention with a couple of minutes to go.
Two matches - reserves and first teams - were played to main BuzzerQuiz rules but only the first team match counted for the trophy.
This was probably just as well for Oxford, as the hosts got off to an excellent start, winning the reserve game as they did when last on home ground two years ago.

The second is UC producer Peter Gwyn's University Challenge: The First 40 Years, telling the history of the show, and containing anecdotes as well as 250 sets of starters and bonuses.
If you would like your own sets of UC-style questions however, then I can strongly recommend BuzzerQuiz, a society run by finalists from University Challenge that write questions for both student and non-student tournaments, such as the Cambridge and Oxford University Quiz Societies annual inter-collegiate tournaments.
If you want to run your own buzzer tournament, or need to get your hands on past question sets to practice for the TV show then drop me a mail.

The Society Committee attempts to allow as many teams to take part as is practical.

The 2004-2005 Championship was notable for its use of a large screen projector to keep the players and audience aware of the score at all times, as well as such inane statistics as the conversion rate, and individual performances.

Have done a few things I will elaborate on later but unfortunately haven't got time to write down right now.
Saturday competed in my first ever Buzzerquiz tounrnament as a sub for the Telstars (three times on University Challenge three years ago ain't the same), we got to semi finals, some very good performances, some diabolical.
As you would expect of a tubercular, loaded, sick sick man my performance was extremely erratic and riddled with doubt.
