Shell Grabbing: After a Koopa Troopa or Buzzy Beetle have been retreated into their shells, Hold the B Button to pick their shells up.
Back in the main level, go down the hill past two Buzzy Beetles, jump the gap, and then climb the hill to face Buzzy Beetles on the roof (they fall down and spin at you as Mario nears them).
Buzzy Beetles will attack here (one off the roof), followed by a jump across the gap to an elevated ledge where another Buzzy Beetle awaits Mario.

Buzzy Beetle, however, is useful in its nonmoving state because you can pick it up and kick it into incoming enemies.

If you time the jump correctly landing on Buzzy Beatle kicking him back towards step while leaving only a small space between the Buzzy Beatle and the step its possible to as you rapidly begin to jump on him to start getting 1ups...
Again I was only ever able to do it once when I was kid back in the prime of the NES era and Im sure you're able to do it in other similar setups in other levels, but the area mentioned was where I was able to do this trick.
Any time you have a koopa or buzzy beetle going down stairs like that you can do it.

I saw a sow bug — the fl-shelled Buzzy Beetle type known in my childhood as a "rolly polly" — struggling to move between two blades of grass.
I wonder if such a slow-moving thing could ever find its way out of the grass in time for that.

Killing Bowser in 3-4 with fireballs reveals that he was really a Buzzy Beetle.
