An acre of land was given for Byberry Friends Meeting by Henry English in 1694.
Byberry Friends School was considered one of the best of the many schools that were operating at this time.
The school was reopened in September 1968 as Byberry Friends Nursery School and Kindergarten to offer pre-school education to 3 and 4 year old children.

On the Byberry issue, Hazell reported that she has arranged for an unnamed developer to draft plans for single-story homes for senior citizens on a portion of the 153-acre tract closest to existing homes.
The plans will be reviewed by the civic group's ad-hoc committee on Byberry redevelopment before they are presented to the general membership at the Dec. 12 meeting.
The Byberry ground is currently state-owned, but the city has an agreement of sale to purchase the land through the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation, a quasi-city agency.

In 1938 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania took over operations at the hospital becuase of conditions that were not exceptable.
But in 1987, by order of the governor, a 18-member task forces was formed and it was decide to close the state hospital within two years for the better of the patients.

Byberry is an old mental hospital in NorthEast philadelphia, infested with asbestos, old papers, and much more interesting things.
There is currently about 27 buildings on the property, my favorite happens to be Old Administration because it is right by the guard shack and it is very fun to mess with the security guards.
If you are going to be going to byberry as a first timer with no experienced people, make sure its not on a holiday or at night.

anyway i am only going to see how powerful this place is. and about the guy in the tunnels that chases you that i can tell you that is a lie and them taking byberry down, they cant they have abestos in there and they don't want to let it out in the surronding air.
I remember passing it as a kid and her saying: "That's Byberry, see that place, that is were they are going to send me back to, if you don't behave." It would have been a great tourist attraction like they have at Eastern State.

There are tunnels connecting to the sewer system that also connect to the sewers underneath the surrounding neighborhoods including the storage sheds that are said to be underneath the NE airport.
There is a story of an individual who is as its been said was a patient at the hospital while it was still a hospital.
He chases people with his machete raised over his head screaming in a rage and although most people have made it out and away from him some people have died in the tunnels because of him and he still roams the tunnels to this day.

Byberry Hall Association was organized in 1854 when the citizens of Byberry township and vicinity decided to form a company for the purpose of erecting a building where residents could meet to hear lectures, hold elections, etc. This collection contains the records of the Byberry Hall Association, 1847-1981.
With the passing of years, the building outlived its usefulness, and there was discussion about the trusteeship of the Association and the care and management of the building.
The record suggests that these matters were considered by Byberry Monthly Meeting and that the Hall was eventually placed under the Meeting's care.

Not much changed after the State took over howver, and this led to Byberry being condemded and it's closing in 1990.during the 1930's byberry was used as a prison 4 german soldiers caught in the war.
People did not have an understanding of Mental Illness and put family members into this sort of facility usually never to be let out into society again.
