  Henry Garnet - LoveToKnow 1911
His antagonism to the secular clergy was also shown later, when in 1603 he, with other Jesuits, was the means of betraying to the government the " Bye Plot," contrived by William Watson, a secular priest.
During the pilgrimage Garnet asked for the prayers of the company " for some good success for the Catholic cause at the beginning of parliament." After his return he went on the 29th of October to Coughton in Warwickshire, near which place it had been settled the conspirators were to assemble after the explosion.
On the 6th of November, Bates, Catesby's servant and one of the conspirators, brought him a letter with the news of the failure of the plot and desiring advice.

The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed attempt by a group of provincial English Catholics to kill King James I of England, his family, and most of the Protestant aristocracy in a single attack by blowing up the Houses of Parliament during the State Opening.
The Gunpowder Plot was one of a series of unsuccessful assassination attempts against James I, and followed the Main Plot and Bye Plot of 1603.
The details of the plot were well known to the principal Jesuit of England, Father Henry Garnet, as he had learned of the plot from Oswald Tesimond, a fellow Jesuit who, with the permission of his penitent Robert Catesby, had discussed the plot with him.

Raleigh, still innocent of plots afoot to destroy his reputation, and unaware of the King's desire for a peaceful foreign policy, offered to supply James with a written account for his strategy for continuing the war against Spain.
He was accused of plotting with his friend, Lord Cobham, to advance the King's cousin, Arabella Stuart, to the throne.
He was charged with taking part in the so-called Bye Plot to capture the King and force him to relax anti-papal legislation.

Bye Plot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Bye Plot was a conspiracy by English Catholics to kidnap King James I of England and force him to repeal anti-Catholic legislation.
The plot was revealed by English Jesuits in 1603, such as Father Henry Garnet, who informed the government because they were afraid of retribution against Catholics if the plan failed.
Early in 1604, as a result of the plot, King James ordered all Catholic clergy to leave England.

Main Plot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Main Plot was a conspiracy by English Catholics, allegedly led by lay Catholic Lord Cobham, to remove King James I of England from the English throne, replacing him by aid of Spain with his cousin Arabella (or Arbella) Stuart.
In the version of the plot presented at trial, Cobham was negotiating with the court of Aremberg to contact the Spanish court for a very large sum of money (approximately one-hundred and sixty thousand pounds).
The plot was discovered by questioning prisoners arrested in connection with the Bye Plot.

Catholicism in England from 1603 to 1750
Unfortunately a brainless plot, the “Bye Plot,” as it is called, organized to capture the king and to force him to yield to the demands of the conspirators, afforded the more bigoted officials a splendid chance of inducing James to continue the former policy of repression.
James admitted frankly his indebtedness to the Catholics for the discovery of the plot, and promised a deputation of laymen who waited on him that the fines imposed on those who refused to attend the Protestant service should not be exacted.
Greenway was consulted after the plot had been arranged, but apparently under the seal of confession with permission, however, to reveal it to none but Garnet, and according to Greenway’s own statement he had done his best to persuade Catesby to abandon his design.

Many modern historians think that Cecil's agents had infiltrated the plot early on in its gestation but allowed it to continue for dramatic effect; certainly the propaganda value of a "Popish plot" was not underplayed during the next few hundred years.

 Father Henry GARNET
The foolish Bye Plot of 1604, designed apparently to kidnap the King, was devised by an unstable priest named William Watson, the same man who had been helped to escape from the Bridewell in 1588 by Margaret Ward.
The failed Bye Plot gave Parliament a reason to pass a new Act of repression "for the due execution of statutes against Catholics".
Unhappily this first crack-brained Bye Plot was followed by a far more serious affair that was to inflame anti-Catholic feeling and cast additional suspicion on the Cathlic clergy.
