In 1652 Kittery was formally made a Massachusetts town, and was authorized to send two deputies to the General Court.
The town of Berwick was incorporated in 1713, and Elisha Plaisted was the first representative to the GeneralCourt of Massachusetts the next year.
For one term Maine was represented in Washington by at-large Congressmen, but in 1823, when the First Congressional District was formed, William Burleigh was elected, and in the 19th Congress he served as chairman of the Committee on Expenditures in the Department of the Treasury.

From 1866, he was president of Massachusetts Agricultural College, of University of Wisconson, of Williams College, and again of Massachusetts Agricultural College.
Member of the House of representatives for Massachusetts from 1831-4; later in the Senate from 1841-5.

 Elijah Parish
PARISH, Elijah, clergyman, born in Lebanon, Connecticut, 7 November, 1762; died in Byfield, Massachusetts, 15 October, 1825.
He was graduated at Dartmouth in 1785, studied theology, and on 20 December, 1787, was settled as pastor of the Congregational church at Byfield, with which he remained connected till his death.
The degree of D. was given him by Dartmouth in 1807.

A painted sign with its characters nearly effaced by time proclaims a deserted, weatherbeaten house in the parish of Byfield, Massachusetts, as the "Home of Gen. Albert Pike." Although not his birthplace it stands for all those things generally connected with a man's first days and years in the world.
His boyhood days were spent in Byfield, and a letter from which Mr.
Byfield is the name of an old-time church parish, the territory of which embraced several towns.
