 Lead story 5
National parks tend to be quite large, with complex management and administration that involves a degree of local democracy, and have strong planning controls over physical infrastructure in the park.
It is generally felt that National Park designation will deter if not prevent additional house-building and erosion of the lands on edge of the Forest, but some are concerned it may encourage further recreation, which can be damaging in particular for ground-nesting birds.
In the UK, national parks are protected landscapes (IUCN Category V sites) rather than national parks in the traditional, North American sense (IUCN Category II) where people can visit but not stay.
