Byram Township is in the Eleventh Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 24th Legislative District.
New Jersey's Eleventh Congressional District, covering western portions of Essex County, all of Morris County, and sections of Passaic County, Somerset County and Sussex County, is represented by Rodney Frelinghuysen (R, Harding Township).
The 24th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Robert Littell (R, Franklin) and in the Assembly by Guy R. Gregg (R, Flanders) and Alison Littell McHose (R, Sparta).

The New York State Breeding Bird Atlas indicates a thriving population of cerulean warbler in the deciduous forests of the Highlands, one of the few concentrations of this species in the state.
One example from the New Jersey portion of the Highlands is Breakneck Mountain, a steep, northwest-facing talus slope with Dewey's sedge (Carex deweyana), Hitchcock's sedge (Carex hitchcockiana), purple clematis (Clematis occidentalis), oak fern (Gymnocarpium dryopteris), fly honeysuckle (Lonicera canadensis), pellitory (Parietaria pennsylvanica), and the only known state occurrence of red pine (Pinus resinosa).
South of the moraine and core area in New Jersey, the focus should be on preserving the existing forested ridges and maintaining the network of agricultural lands and grasslands in the valleys.

Stanhope began as an unincorporated village in the southern portion of Byram Township.
Stanhope remained part of Byram Township throughout the 19th Century and was incorporated as a Borough in 1904.
As is the case with most early New Jersey iron manufacturing enterprises, the Stanhope iron companies alternately prospered and faced financial reverses until about 1830 when the wood supply for charcoal was exhausted and the works were forced to shut down.

 The Morris Canal in New Jersey
The Morris Canal Greenway encompasses part of the historic Morris Canal's alignment and is a cooperative effort of the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry, the Canal Society of New Jersey, Waterloo Village and Friends of the Morris Canal.
Brian Morrell, vice president of the Canal Society of New Jersey, is one of the many volunteers who has helped to clear the towpath of brush and identify historic features that remain in order to create a walking path on the Morris Canal Greenway.
This impoundment, New Jersey's largest, was created from two smaller lakes to be the major water supply for the Morris Canal at its summit level.

When Byram voters visit the polls on Tuesday, not all will realize that the unusual timing of the election traces back 20 years to a political fight that changed the township's government.
The first elections for the new form of government took place 20 years ago Tuesday, the second Tuesday in May. Byram's first Township Council and independently elected mayor, all nonpartisan, took office July 1, 1985.
"The people of Byram felt at the time that one of the handicaps to good government is that there was so much party bickering," Richard Bowe, the township's first non-partisan mayor and the attorney for the citizens' group that filed petitions to change the form of government, said recently.

In an effort to encourage the state Department of Transportation to listen to the Township Council in Byram, 13 environmental, transportation and planning groups sent a letter to Gov. Jon S. Corzine and DOT Commissioner Kris Kolluri asking them to reconsider the DOT's plans for widening Route 206.
The letter was signed by the leaders of three local citizens groups, Concerned Citizens of Hopatcong, North Byram Concerned Citizens and Save Rural Andover Borough, as well as the Sierra Club of New Jersey and the Tri-State Transportation Campaign.
The alternative plan calls for a pedestrian-friendly boulevard with three lanes in the center, one that could be a reversible lane depending on the time of day and two local lanes with on street parking.

In New Jersey‘s inaugural year (1996) of official mountain bike trail maintenance (a program known as Pay Dirt that has been adopted in many states across the country), Team Bulldog accumulated more hours than any other team in the state.
