The 24th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Robert Littell (R, Franklin) and in the Assembly by Guy R. Gregg (R, Flanders) and Alison Littell McHose (R, Sparta).
The township is bisected by U.S. Route 206.

BYRAM TOWNSHIP, NJ -- A broad coalition of regional, state and local planning, transportation and environmental groups has again written to New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine and Department of Transportation Commissioner Kris Kolluri calling for a more economical and environmentally sensitive design for Route 206 in Byram Township.
Byram's State-designated Village Center, a one-mile stretch of properties straddling Route 206 -- equal to about two percent of the township's total land area -- is the only place where economic growth can take place in the Township.
Byram Township officials, who have also been frustrated by DOT's lack of responsiveness, were pleased with the show of support from such a widespread and diverse coalition of organizations.

The New Jersey Midland Railroad opened to Ogdensburg in 1872 for zinc ore traffic, but in 1882 the line was extended to Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and a station was built at Sparta, giving tourists easy access to the many boarding houses that served summer residents from the cities.

Stanhope began as an unincorporated village in the southern portion of Byram Township.
Stanhope remained part of Byram Township throughout the 19th Century and was incorporated as a Borough in 1904.

BYRAM — Following what is becoming a trend in municipalities in New Jersey, the Township Council is considering an ordinance requiring all people working with minors in recreational programs to submit to a criminal background check.
A three-person committee — appointed by the police chief, township manager and recreation director — will handle appeals from people whose criminal background checks prevent them from being cleared to work with children.
The Byram ordinance applies to all programs using township facilities or receiving financial support from the town, Councilman Earl Riley said.
