Topic: Byrdmaniax

In the News (Sat 20 Jul 19)

  Byrdmaniax
Under the regime of producer Terry Melcher, both Ballad of Easy Rider and (Untitled) had made the Top 40 on the album charts, so there was never any question who would produce their next album.
Almost as soon as Byrdmaniax was in the can, the band members started to express dissatisfaction with Melcher's overproduction.
Byrdmaniax made the Top Fifty, but the band members were unhappy with it, and vowed to avoid the pitfalls of the album on their next LP.

As legend has it, The Byrds [+] wrapped up the basic tracks for Byrdmaniax [+] in early 1971 and then hit the road for a concert tour, leaving producers Terry Melcher [+] and Chris Hinshaw [+] to polish the final mix.
Melcher and Hinshaw then proceeded to add copious overdubs to what the group had set down, drowning the songs in a swampy morass of keyboards, horns, strings, and massed background singers in the misguided hope of making the album sound more "commercial" (even Clarence White [+]'s superb lead guitar often gets lost in the murk).
Not an awful album, but Byrdmaniax [+] is hardly the pleasure it could have been in the hands of a more tasteful production team.

Byrdmaniax may not be the pick of the Byrds' canon, but it sits well in Sony's imaginative repackaging of this much-loved band's back-catalogue.
The problem with "Byrdmaniax" is that it is over produced by Terry Melcher and Chris Hinshaw.
Byrdmaniax is not bad at all the things that many people call overporducing was all the srings and horn and trumpets and trombones.

Byrdmaniax has been sidelined ever since its original 1971 release, when it arrived in the wake of the triumphant Untitled.
Original tracks are enhanced by a sensitive alternate version of McGuinn's "Pale Blue" and, particularly, by Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman." Byrdmaniax may not be the pick of the Byrds' canon, but it sits well in Sony's imaginative repackaging of this much-loved band's catalog.

Because they were contractually bound to release two albums a year, the Byrds trudged into the studio for three weeks in January 1971 straight off a tour supporting 1970's UNTITLED.
Originally derided by critics and fans alike due to Terry Melcher's liberal use of strings and brass, BYRDMANIAX is a mish-mash of musical styles that makes for a fascinating listening experience.

Almost all of the Byrds catalogue is in print, with a few exceptions.
Byrdmaniax and Farther Along, both released in 1971, were out of print for years before they were reissued in February 2000 with bonus tracks.
This quartet was more talented than they are usually given credit for, but Byrdmaniax doesn't do them justice.

Farther Along was recorded within three months of Byrdmaniax, so eager was the band to make amends.
Because of their closeness in time, their programmatic similarity is not surprising, though the sound has been considerably cleaned up.
The personalities which are projected here are of the same cloth as those which in part reach back beyond Byrdmaniax to Ballad of Easy Rider, the first album to identify the new Byrds.

The Austin Chronicle Music: Record Reviews
As appropriate as it may seem, the silver death mask that adorns 1971's Byrdmaniax did not signal the Byrds' demise.
That came the following year with Farther Along, but Columbia Legacy's latest batch of Byrds reissues does cap off the label's four-year-plus restoration of the psychedelic folk-rock pioneers' original catalog (the posthumous demos collection, Pre-Flyte, and Greatest Hits II notwithstanding).
If White hadn't died in 1973 at age 29, run down by a drunk driver while loading his musical equipment curbside, the cover of Byrdmaniax wouldn't hold such grim irony.

I loved all the different sounds they provided.
My favorite is "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo", but I never disliked Byrdmaniax or even read the reviews when it was released.
I never paid too much attention to that stuff, as most critics usually didn't have a clue, and I was too much the collector to listen to them anyway.
