Cut by the popular comic duo Collins and Harlan (baritone Arthur Collins and tenor Byron G. Harlan), it was issued on Victor 18235.
The spelling "jas," which is on all Collins and Harlan renditions of the tune, is worth exploring.
Irving Berlin's 1911 "Alexander's Ragtime Band" is a prototype--even here Collins and Harlan played a part, deserving much credit for popularizing the tune since their Victor recording of it (16908) was among the best-selling discs of that decade (Eddie Morton's "Oceana Roll" on the other side did not hurt sales).

Collins was the first to record the song that would become Bert Williams' signature song, "Nobody." His collaboration with Byron G. Harlan was one of the most successful in recording history.
Byron Harlan, the tenor half of Collins and Harlan, sings it and sells it like a pro.
He recorded 72 baritone solos and 50 duets and "rube sketches" with Byron G. Harlan for Edison, as well as duets with Corinne Morgan, Irving Gillette, Grace Nelson, and Elise Stevenson.

In the November 1931 issue, he states that Harlan "is planning to give a series of radio programs, based on the duets which he and Mr.
He had written about Byron G. Harlan in the February and March, 1943 issues of Hobbies but could have written a more definitive account of the tenor had he waited two decades.
In the December 1961 issue, which lists years of birth and death for hundreds of popular and classical recording artists, Walsh adds in parenthesis to the Byron G. Harlan entry, "This is being typed on the 100th anniversary of his birth." Harlan had been born on August 29, 1861.

According to Joe Belmont (as reported by Jim Walsh in 1947), the male contingent consisted of Belmont, Byron G. Harlan (tenors), and Frank C. Stanley (baritone), with three female singers from the Florodora cast.

I now realize that the Collins and Harlan recording preserves an unwritten but authentic interpolation introduced by the song's own lyricist.

It did not enjoy the long life of its inspirational predecesor - it seems to have only been recorded on this one occasion.
Arthur Collins and Byron G. Harlan, one of the more prolific and profitable duets during the 1900s, had only been together a short while when this was recorded for Edison Labs in October of 1902.
Edison Labs did not yet hire large orchestras to accompany singers on their cylinders; the piano work of recording pioneer Frank Banta is the sole accompaniment.
