A byway in the United Kingdom is a minor secondary or tertiary road.
In the United Kingdom, a byway open to all traffic (BOAT) is a highway over which the public have a right of way for vehicular and all other kinds of traffic but which is used by the public mainly for the purpose for which footpaths and bridleways are used.
A byway open to all traffic is sometimes waymarked using a red arrow on a metal or plastic disc or by red paint dots on posts and trees.

National Scenic Byways, the second group of nationally designated byways, represent roadways that are destinations in themselves and deserve national recognition for the intrinsic values they feature.
The RSA says that any road in a town, other than a class I or class II highway, may be designated as a Scenic Road upon petition of 10 persons who are either voters of the town or who own land that abuts a road mentioned in the petition.
All abutters of the road must be notified within 10 days of the filing that a Scenic Road petition has been filed.

In Ohio, the National Road runs 227.87 miles from Belmont County in the east to Preble County in the west, crossing through rural areas, pike towns, county seats and urban Columbus.
In 1825, ground was broken in Ohio, with the Road reaching Zanesville in 1830, Columbus in 1833 and Springfield in 1838.
The National Road began to decline after 1850 as a new form of transportation, the railroad, replaced animal and foot power as the preferred method of long-distance travel.

Along AL 117 between the Georgia Line and I-59, we noticed that almost every road (including several dirt roads) were signed with blue pentagon county route markers.
IMHO, this is the best stretch of mountain road we've ever been on since driving the Russell-Brasstown Scenic Byway.
The only part of the drive that we were not fond of were the extremely narrow bridges we crossed along AL 117, but it looked like Alabama DOT was grading out land and getting ready to replace one of them in the Mentone/Valley Hill vicinity.
