Old favourites such as the 'We'll be back' rule are still around, but have been updated slightly to take into account changes in 40K 3rd Edition, and like the Terminator from the movies they have a nasty habit of getting back up again no matter how hard you hit them.
The war against the Old Ones was not as simple as either the C'tan or Necrons has believed it would be, and wars raged between the C'tan themselves, forcing the star gods to take shelter and slumber while they waited for a more opportune time to destroy what remained alive.
Millions of years of battle between the C'tan and their enemies the Old Ones, left the universe a barren and torn place and the Old Ones had little recourse than to speed up the evolution of the young races and use their mastery of psychic power and the warp to destroy the C'tan.

C'tan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the fictional universe of Warhammer 40,000, the C'tan originally lived as energy beings that fed on the stars themselves.
Then the Laughing God of Eldar tricked the C'tan into consuming each other until only four remained.
Thus the C'tan decided to enter stasis until life repopulated the galaxy and their harvests could begin again.

When we were making proposals for a new Warhammer 40,000 race (Tau and Kroot winning out in the end), I had included one for the C'tan, masters of the Necrons.
To cement the C'tan and Necrons into the Warhammer 40,000 background we worked up a suitably cosmic struggle for supremacy at the dawn of time.
Then came Warhammer 40,000 3rd edition and a long, fallow period for the Necrons while the other races had their Codexes updated with lots of new miniatures.

Old Ones are first, (C'tan were first in an embryonic stage but they weren't awake) but they are this galaxy only.
The Old Ones are apparently the first sortof intelligent lifeforms who created everybody else except the Necrontyr and the C'tan.
ahem...i'd like to think the old ones came first, but the C'tan supposedly outdate all life-fosm in the galaxy, including the Old Ones, at least the Old Ones were dozing off on stars for the large part of their lives.

The Necrontyr discovered a race of star-born entities who lived in the very suns that caused their home world and those around it so much damage, and seeing in them an ultimate way to destroy the Old Ones they began to worship these 'Star Gods' or C'tan in their own language.
Soon almost nothing remained of the ancient race of the Necrontyr, and all that stood it in its place was the mechanical servants of the C'tan, the Necrons.
The Necrontyr received great powers from the C'tan and began on their road to perfection, purging their bodies and replacing them with mechanical ones.

The Eldar know more, possessed of ancient psycho-memories going back to the time of the Old Ones, but even to the Eldar the C'Tan are remembered in only ancient myths.
This means that an average Enslaver may similtaneously control up to four creatures, more powerful ones more.
At the same time lived the Old Ones, precursors of the Eldar and many other modern races, and who were incredibly long lived.

The very star under which the Necrontyr race lived their brief, morbid lives gave birth to the vast sun-spanning energy that was the Nightbringer.

 Warhammer 40,000 - Necrons
Of all the so-called star-gods, the C'tan in the ancient Necrontyr scripts, Yngir to the Eldar, the one known as the Deceiver was the most insidious and capricious.
In ages past, even when the Necrontyr were still clothed in flesh, the other C'tan learned to shun the influence of the Deceiver.
Its manifestation is also said to have been a time of great rejoicing among the Necrontyr - they were awe-struck by its fluid transition to an earthly form among them and the ease with which it adapted to the realm of matter.

And the C'Tan are not "allergic" to "warp life" - it is the raw energies of the immaterium which are anatheme to their being (C'Tan being purely material and the warp's prime property being to distort natural laws).

The Yngir are in fact the 'evil Gods' of the Eldar so it would be correct to say the C'tan are in a sense 'Eldar Gods' but the term would be reffering to them in the religious sense rather than a term to describe their actual 'nature'.

The fact that the Tau don't have a big warp signature (ie their souls don't burn brightly in the Warp) shouldn't really affect their taste to the C'tan, since the souls of the people consumed seem to be completely ignored by the procedure.
This being the case, and knowing for reasonably sure that the Krork became the Orks, it seems likley that either the Old Boyz were the Krork, or they were the Slann generals assigned to the Krork.
However, what would the Necrons make of the Tau, and expanding young race who were not around at the time of their going into stasis and the Enslaver Plague?

Eldar (Warhammer 40,000) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the table-top wargame Warhammer 40,000, the Eldar are a race of elf-like humanoids, the most ancient and advanced in the game's history, with the exception of the Necrons and their C'tan masters.
The history of the Eldar in Warhammer 40,000 mimics that of Tolkien's elves, to the point that they are a "dwindling race" in the game universe, as the elves were in Middle-earth's Third Age.
In the sense that Warhammer 40,000 races are derived from the earlier Warhammer Fantasy game, Eldar are derived from High Elves, except for Exodites who are the equivalent of the Wood Elves.

More objective view: the Old Ones, also known as Ancient Slann or simply Slann, are in 40k probably the most ancient race of the galaxy (at least that we know of).
This probably caused the collapse of the Slann civilisation (as they were powerful psykers) and forced the C'tan into slumber.
The Slann are an ancient race that, according the Adepts of the Mechanicus, have devolved.
