Minor scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A minor scale in musical theory is a diatonic scale whose third scale degree is an interval of a minor third above the tonic.
Sometimes the natural minor scale is equated with the Aeolian mode, but a key characteristic of music in the minor mode in the common practice period of Western music is the use of the leading tone, a half step below the tonic.
Minor modes use the same set of key signatures as major modes; whichever signature corresponds to the step pattern of the natural minor scale is considered the key signature for that minor mode.

C minor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
C minor (abreviated Cm) is a minor scale based on C, consisting of the pitches C, D, E-flat, F, G, A-flat, B and C (harmonic minor scale).
In the Baroque period, music in C minor was usually written with a two-flat key signature, and some modern editions of that repertoire keep it that way.
C minor has been associated with heroic struggle since Beethoven's time, with the quintessential work in the key being his Symphony No. 5; see Beethoven and C minor.

 Chopin Prelude in C Minor
C minor receives a rich harmonic treatment: progressions in 1st four bars are root movement by fifth, chords in root position.
The lst bar clearly defines c minor (I-IV7- V-I) The 2nd bar emphasizes third relationship to c minor (Ab major) with virtually the same progression; the Db chord which functions as a IV in Ab is the Neapolitan of c-minor (bII).
However, in measure 6, the grounding of c minor is confirmed when the French 6th is heard on the 2nd beat of measure 6.

The final movement, in C major, is a set of variations on a 16-bar theme, with a brief modulating interlude and final coda.

Minor approached each pedestrian victim within the same relative area on the north side of the City of Richmond and identified himself as “Kevin Wilkinson” to C.M. and as “Kevin” to W.S. He offered each one a ride in his vehicle, which C.M. and W.S. willingly accepted by getting into Minor’s vehicle.
Minor also attempted to have anal sodomy with W.S. Eventually, Minor drove to another location where he pulled out a gun and pointed it at W.S.’s head, telling her not to scream.
G.C. testified that Minor forced her to engage in acts of vaginal intercourse, oral sodomy, and anal sodomy, while “poking” her with the knife or “bang[ing]” her head on the vehicle.

The 3rd of the minor scale must be raised (to form a major 3rd) to produce the tritone, (see lesson 12 - the tritone), that unsettles the dominant 7th thereby providing the pull back to the tonic.
The interval from C to F is a fourth, as is the interval from D flat to G flat.
Because the key signatures for A flat major and f minor are identical, f minor is said to be the relative minor to A flat major and A flat major is said to be the relative major to f minor.

Johann Sebastian Bach wrote his Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor in 1717 and is catalogued among his Great Organ Preludes and Fugues from Weimar.
Kraemer conjectured that Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor was the composition Bach prepared when he visited the court of Dresden for the showdown with Parisian church organist, Louis Marchand.
For his Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, Bach used a four-measure theme from a passacaglia by the French organist André Raison, to which he added a second four measures to make the ground a completed two-phrase period (unlike earlier passacaglias, whose ground usually consisted of four measures moving from tonic to dominant).

Portions of this Mass in C Minor were sung in the small church of St. Peter in Salzburg with Constanze herself as soprano soloist.
Shortly before the composition of the Mass in C Minor, Mozart had what music historian Paul Henry Lang describes as "a disturbing encounter with the music of Bach." Mozart's rather late exposure to the music of Bach made a profound impression on him and caused his music to become more contrapuntal.
Even in its form as Mozart left it, the Mass in C Minor is regarded as one of the three greatest settings of the Mass Ordinary (the other two being Bach's Mass in B Minor and Beethoven's Missa Solemnis).

The root triad (i) in minor is composed of a root, a minor third, and a perfect fifth.
This also preserves the strong cadence that results in a V-I progression (or V-i in minor keys): in classical voice leading (which we may revisit later on), the third of V (which is the leading tone) always resolves to the root of I (or i).
For example, the A minor chord could be I in A minor, or VI in C major, or the IV in D minor.

 Tonality and Harmony: Scales
Compositions in the minor mode often raise both the 6th and the 7th scale degrees in ascending melodic line, which results in the ascending melodic minor scale.
Likewise, the closely related keys of A minor are D minor (subdominant), G minor (dominant), and all their relative majors, C, F, and G majors.
The natural minor scale is used for the circle-of-5ths progression in minor until the final dominant chord (with the raised scaled degree 7 as the leading tone) is reached at the cadence.

In this lesson, we'll depart from that tack by taking a look at a minor tuning—a variant on G minor: C G D G Bb D. As you'll see, there are many advantages to minor tunings, such as cool tonal opportunities, easier fingerings, and a host of new compositional ideas.
Since minor chords are a significant part of any key (the ii, iii, and vi chords of major keys are always minor), this is a real drawback to major tunings.
In G minor with a C bass, any one-finger barre can create a five-note minor chord analogous to the major one-finger barre chords in open G. But here's the kicker: it is also extremely easy to play major chords.
