K-ration - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Due to its use by Airborne troops, however, the K ration was thereafter viewed as being a successful, lightweight, and easily-issued source of food for frontline troops.
As it was based on an emergency ration, the K- lacked roughly 800-1,200 of the calories required by highly active persons (such as men at war).
Often, a secondary food source was issued, such as a D-ration, or fresh oranges, in an attempt to bring up the calorie count.

 HISTORY OF RATIONS
Ration, small detachment, 5-in-1, is designed for conditions where small groups of men are able to prepare hot meals with rudimentary cooking facilities, or where large groups may be divided into bodies of 5 or 10 men for the purpose of feeding themselves.
The purpose of this ration was to serve as the principle ration for subsistence of troops in all areas in advance of the field kitchen, but prior to engaging in actual combat, for troops isolated in small groups, and for highly mobile troops.
The D ration was intended to allay worst hunger of a single missed meal; the C ration was considered too heavy and bulky for mobile units.
