Topic: C Tuning

C Tuning - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
C tuning is a type of tuning for guitars.
It just sounded a little heavier than tuning in E."[1] Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins also had a prototype Reverend guitar built for him that was specially designed to be tuned in C, which was used in the songs "The Everlasting Gaze" and "Heavy Metal Machine".

 The C Scale Tuning
In a similar fashion, the C scale can be altered to a G scale by sharping one note (F to F#), and then altered to a D scale by sharping one more (C to C#).
The dilemna is that a D note that is in tune with the A string (derived as a third of F) is considerably flat of a D note that is in tune with the G string (derived as a fifth of C).
The tuning of the strings, pedals and 3 of the knee levers are dictated by the Nashville E9th standard, with the 4th knee lever (and perhaps a 5th, vertical lever) set up to the player's preference.

Even in the inaudible treble, the duplex scale is “tuned” in the sense that the aliquot bar is placed at a location such that the length of the duplex part of the string is a harmonic length of the speaking section of the string in order to optimize the impedance (“aliquot” means fractional or harmonic).
In harmonic tuning you tune, for example, the fundamental or a harmonic of the upper note to a higher harmonic of the lower note.

C - From G tuning, tune the B note up to C. Double C Tuning -- This tuning is very popular among clawhammer banjo players and is probably even more popular than G tuning for playing fiddle tunes.
Many fiddle tunes are played in the key of D by fiddlers and banjo players will play along using this tuning and put a capo on the 2nd fret to get in the key of D. Notice that from G Modal tuning only one string is retuned.
C - From G tuning, tune the D note down to C. D Tuning -- D tuning is probably the most common alternative tuning for bluegrass players.

This tuning can be thought of as a step beyond Double Drop-D tuning: the 5th string is also lowered a full step, leaving the 'middle' three strings as in standard tuning, in which they just happen to form a G major triad.
The C on the 4th string is the major second, facilitating internal resolves to the major third (D) It's very unusual to include the major seventh (A) in a tuning, though it makes sense as part of the V7 chord (F7), and would enable hammered-on resolutions to the Bb tonic.
In any case, this tuning is great for playing melodic lines (in A, especially) on the 3rd string, or intervals on the 3rd and 4th strings together, against the open A and E of the 2nd and 1st strings (not to mention the open A and E of the 5th and 6th strings).

Traditional power chords require you split your fingers by two frets, which is extremely hard for small people like me. Tuning into Drop C or Drop D will allow you to play power chords on the biggest three strings by playing the same fret on all three strings.
Just make sure the tab is in Drop C tuning (sometimes authors of tab say 1 step down of Drop D).

Various Tunings For Acoustic guitar - Consult-Eco
The tuning is most often used in 'Country and Western' music but it does have other possibilities, which need investigating, for both solo/instrumental work and also for providing a contrasting backing accompaniment for a low pitched singing voice.
The most accurate method of tuning available today (2001) is via one of the portable battery operated tuning machines distributed by companies such as Boss, Sony, Yamaha, etc. All of the better models have a jack-socket input so that they can be placed between the guitar and the amplifier for electric and electro-acoustic guitars.
This has made tuning on stage very simple and direct and is not troubled by sounds from other instruments in the band or from people in the audience.

I wonder why they do this...they record every song in normal drop D tuning (D, A, D, G, B, E) so if you listen to the albums vs. live performances, the album will sound "higher".
The weird thing is on certain late night shows, they play on the lower tuning, and on some its normal.
BA is in drop D, so they capo the first fret, SP is all in standard, so they tune up the C# to D# and then capo 1 again, and clarity I think is a mix between standard and drop d, so they capo 1.

Later, back at the house, guitar in hand, I said, "Okay, so how does that tuning go again?" He stomped off grumbling and waving his arms in exasperation.
