§23. R. L. Stevenson. III. Critical and Miscellaneous Prose. Vol. 14. The Victorian Age, Part Two. The Cambridge ...
8 Versatility was one of Stevenson’s most conspicuous qualities, for, besides being the foremost essayist since Lamb and a master of fiction, whether in the form of romance or in that of short story, he was also a dramatist and a poet.
In these romances, Stevenson is at his best, like Scott, when he is dealing with his native land; but a comparison with the Waverley novels shows that, fine as his work is, it falls decidedly short of the greatest.
Stevenson was growing till he died, and the wonderful creation of the old judge, one of the best drawn characters in prose fiction, deepens the regret that his days were numbered.

 Robert Louis Stevenson Biography
Stevenson maintained that his art, his life, and his mode of creation were all in some part derivative of the highly exaggerated and romantic world that he had inherited from Skelt's toy.
Stevenson detailed his three cruises and adventures in the letters he wrote to his friends, exulting in his newfound health, relating incidents of life on the open sea, and capturing the flavor of life lived away from Western civilization.
What Stevenson was left with was a literary reputation based solely on his romances--a reputation that solidly ignored his South Seas fiction, his essays, his travelogues about America and the Pacific, and the letters that revealed his enthusiasm for his craft and for the islanders of the South Pacific.

Indeed, Stevenson argued, it is precisely this connection to motivation and feeling, ‘the emotive meaning of ethical terms’, that explains what Moore had discovered but could explain only with metaphysical and epistemological mystery: the irreducibility of ethical concepts to natural concepts.
Stevenson, as Urmson has argued, was supposedly different from these early emotivists insofar as he was concerned with motivation, and hence, with internalism, in arguing for emotivism.
Stevenson did not accept that a person could consider an action to be wrong and “for that very reason” be in favor of performing the action.

Stevenson claims there are, and that it is possible (a point that Ayer will not concede) to continue to argue even when two disputants know the relevant facts of a case, but still disagree in attitude over whether the facts lead to their respective moral claims.
Stevenson claims, however, that ethical judgments have either imperative or prescriptive force.
Stevenson simply claims that a reason is relevant when it serves to strengthen or weaken the claims of the hearer; but Wellman appears to assert that Stevenson cannot claim any kind of objectivity for an ethical claim unless the reasons for the claim are also ones that can be true or false.

 ANNE STEVENSON
Stevenson was writer-in-residence at the University of Dundee, 1973-75, a fellow at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, 1975-77, and writer-in-residence at Bulmershe College, Reading, Berkshire, 1977-78, and the University of Edinburgh, 1987-89.
Stevenson shows herself possessed of narrative skills in poetry not seen in English verse for a long time; Lowell's Mills of the Kavanaughs is perhaps its nearest ancestor, though Stevenson's spareness of style contrasts sharply with Lowell's baroque profusion.
Stevenson said the award was a tribute to the large arts scene in the north-east, which includes Booker prize-winning novelist Pat Barker, the poet and critic Sean O'Brien - twice winner of the Forward poetry prize - and the children's laureate, Anne Fine.

Section C confronts one important question that the revised account raises -- namely, how we can determine whether a given defense is better understood as qualifying a prima facie norm (hence is conceptually a justification) or as foreclosing punishment for violation of a norm (hence is conceptually an excuse).
In brief, Christopher argues that when A, B, and C are shooting at one another "around in a circle" -- A at B, B at C, C at A -- each unaware that his intended victim is threatening the third person (who in turn threatens the actor himself), Paul Robinson's objective approach is internally contradictory.
C is justified on a deeds approach if and only if, had he not shot A, (1) A would have reloaded and finished off B, and (2) the death of B is worse (on the deeds theorists' metric) than the sum of moderate injury to B plus grievous injury of A.

Thus Stevenson admits that further rational argumentation is impossible, but that does not mean that argument stops.
As Wellman puts it, "it is only in the most uninteresting sense that formal logic applies to even the simplest and most straightforward ethical argument, for the validity of the argument does nothing whatsoever to establish the ethical import of the conclusion in question."
Of course, Stevenson would disagree since he claims that 'wrong' has a dynamic use, that, I believe, means that the use of the word 'wrong' serves to influence, not to 'prove' in the strict sense.

Following Hume, he thought causation could be reduced to regularity: “c causes e” is equivalent to “whenever c then e”.
This latter point Ayer did respond to: moral disagreements were, he (and Stevenson) claimed, either genuine disputes about non-moral facts, or simply not genuine disagreements.
