Commodore 64 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the United Kingdom, the primary competitors to the C64 were the British-built Sinclair ZX Spectrum and the Amstrad CPC.
The C64 would rival the Spectrum in popularity in the latter half of the 1980s eventually outliving the Spectrum when it was discontinued in 1992.
The Commodore 1701 was a 13 inch (330 mm) color monitor for the C64, which accepted analog composite video as input, as well as separate chrominance and luminance signals (today we call this S-Video) for superior performance with the C64.

According to the 2001 edition of Guinness book of records, the C64 was the most "prolific computing device ever manufactured".
The C64 also had the ability to recognise user-established priorities by which 'sprites' (or movable blocks) could move independently of displayed text/graphics, enabling the creation of graphics with up to 8 layers.
Basically it was a re-boxed C64, without a keyboard or any other interfaces, except for the cartridge slot on top.

It's a nice feature to access the pc filesystem via the c64, but somehow I find it dangerous, pc programs look very strange listed on a c64, but than again it is not as easy to delete something on a disk with a c64 than it is on a pc (via del...).
So this is a solution in between, you are able to use the hardware of a pc, but the filename convention of a c64 (16 characters) is crippled.

Since I'd been programming Java a lot and had heard complaints about Java's performance I thought that a perfect performance test (and a fun project) would be to implement a C64 emulator in Java.
I started the development by reading a lot of the C64 and 6510 documentation available on the Internet (googling a lot ;-).
A few days later I had the first version of JaC64 booting the C64 basic - allowing some peeking and pokeing, but had no features for loading programs and did only have text-mode implemented.
