C86 is the name of a cassette compilation released by the British music magazine New Musical Express (NME) in 1986, and later the name of a musical subgenre.
C86 was similarly designed to reflect the new music scene of the time and compiled by NME writers; Roy Carr, Neil Jones and Adrian Thrills who licenced tracks from labels such as Creation, Pink, and Ron Johnson.
C86 was also rooted in the Scottish post-punk bands of the early 1980s on the independent Postcard label: Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, The Fire Engines and Josef K (although those bands soul/funk/disco influences were usually forgotten).
Really though none of the C86 groups made real connections with Orange Juice because none of them seemed to have that love of Disco and Funk that the OJs or Josef K did.
Both bands had politics (and Politics) fermenting in their records, although it was McCarthy who were most transparent about it, with amazing Pop songs full of intelligent character based lyrics that often left the casual listener confused as to what the real message was.
At the time, however, there were younger upstarts doing the same thing, and whilst they did it with much less style and passion they had freshness on their side.
The only thing I know about the The Waltones is that Mark Collins went onto be a member of The Charlatans and another member went on to be a member of Meadowlark II which was the band formed by ex Bodine Mick Ryan.
As it's the weekend of the C86 events at the ICA this podcast has a C86 tinged feel with some classics alongside some of the best new tracks featured on indie mp3 in the past month.
C86 and issues around it means it has it's detractors but twenty years on and I'm Not Scared To Get Happy once again.
The C86 tape was originally given away free with the NME.
C86 certainly wasn't twee as you may have been lead to believe.
As Alistair Fitchett writes the bands on C86, many who looked towards Orange Juice, Fire Engines and Josef K for inspiration but not these bands love of genres such as funk and disco, resulting in a lack of diversity on the tape (apart from maybe Age Of Chance and Mighty Mighty).
The C86 repair kit is no doubt designed to work with Dura-brite ink, which is a factor I had not considered when I ordered the kit last year.
On the C86, the purge hose meets an integrated hose adapter that steps the smaller hose from under the capping assembly up to the slightly larger hose that goes into the purge pump.
I do believe the C86 should be sold as a disposable unit only like a Huggie, Tampon, or overripe bananna; use it once until the ink runs out and throw it away.
Taking Sides : C81 vs C86(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
I can't comment on the effect of C86 when it came out because I was 10 in 1986, I didn't hear until I found a copy in Reading's Sound Machine when I was 21.
As far as I'm concerned (and being 42 in a couple of weeks time I think I'm in quite a good position to judge both) the difference in the the two is that the only connection is the title.
C81 was a melting pot of different sounds and styles while C86 was an overview of the current (mainly) British bands who seemed to share a certain jangly style and seemed to represent the new hope as the NME saw it.
You got me. C86 is literal abbreviation for Cassette 86, which refers to a tape given away with then 34 year old NME magazine in, unsurprisingly, 1986.
While C86 came to be a genre rather than a literal tape, some of the bands on the original compilation were neither janglepop nor twee (ie.
Tom of Indie-mp3 whose tag-line is "Keeping the c86 alive" points out another distinction between the current tweepop and indie music scene and the c86 scene: politics.
The Epson C86 and C88 appear to print in a very similar matter, particularly on matte paper.
The C86 and C88 with the EZ carbon pigment inksets can make BandW prints that are as lightfast and archival as the most expensive systems available for home digital printing.
Additionally, for a few papers and the C86, I have made simple grayscale Photoshop curves that can also be loaded as Transfer Functions and can profile the printer more accurately.

C86 Plus is an expanded CD version of the BMX Bandits' previously vinyl-only 1989 release, C86.
(C86 was the name of a promotional cassette that came with a copy of New Musical Express, and featured a batch of new indie guitar bands; it eventually became the unofficial name of an entire subgenre of artless British guitar pop).
The BMX Bandits submitted a song for inclusion on the tape, but were rejected; the song "C86" is their tongue-in-cheek response.

the c86 casette spawned a genre of music by the same name, which to quote mocking music, "refers to mid to late 80s and early 90s British indie pop that was generally "twee" (think Scottish group Belle & Sebastian for definitive twee).
Although most tweepop groups grow from c86, the c86 genre is arguably identified as jangle pop.
one of the few c86 bands to survive into the 90s without changing their sound so much as to lose any connection to the original sound of "c86"...

there are individual scenes which are quite disjoint which people often lump together as "c86", drawing conncetions that weren't there.
the tendency to accent the pop components of the cassette and then make c86 out to be jangle pop or shoegazingpop, ignores the heavier elements of bands like big flame.
maybe that was the point of the bmx bandits naming their lp C86 (that and to mock the nme for not including them).

I dunno if it's interesting but some may already know that C86 was in fact only the latest in a whole series of NME Cassettes which started back in 1981 with the cleverly titled C81, can't quite recall now if it was 81 minutes long but wouldn't be at all surprised.
The whole series of NME tapes was born out of a conversation between myself and then NME journalist Roy Carr back when I was working for Rough Trade Records in London's then ultra-cool Ladbroke Grove area.
