As expected, Brive proved a totally different proposition on home turf than the October rain of Kingston Park, and it was credit to the workmanlike attitude of the Falcons that they held their nerve and kept their cool under a barrage of crowd noise and ample provocation.
Brive opted against taking the points when handed a penalty on the 22 moments later, with the Falcons neutralising the threat of a rolling maul five metres from their line as they forced Petitjean in to a hurried drop goal, which the fly half sliced wide from in front.
With Newcastle camped in the Brive 22 and firmly in the driving seat, a drifting run from Burke held the defence as he offloaded to Matt Thompson, who drew the last man to put Geoff Parling in for a well-worked try in the right corner, converted by Burke.

Poor discipline was again Brive's downfall ten minutes in when offside from a midfield ruck handed Wilkinson a 40-metre penalty from the right hand side, which he duly hammered through the uprights in emphatic style.
Brive scrum half Tim Clark twice turned down shots at goal to opt for attacking line outs, and his patience was eventually rewarded as South African openside Charl van Rensburg was driven over the line under the weight of a rolling maul in the left corner.
Wilkinson kept Brive guessing with his use of straightening runners as Micky Ward, Noon and Luke Gross all penetrated the defensive line, while Geoff Parling continued to prove a good source of off-the-top line out ball in the wet.

However, if they win in Brive they will get one of the top two seedings which will guarantee home fixtures in the quarter final and, hopefully, the semi final stage of the competition.
Defeat in Brive will probably give the Falcons a home quarter final but force them to travel for their semi final.
As things stand Brive themselves are in a qualifying position as one of the best three runners-up and could find themselves travelling to meet Gloucester, London Irish or conceivably the Falcons again in the knockout stage.
