The CAC CA-12 Boomerang was a World War II fighter aircraft manufactured in Australia between 1942 and 1945.
The Boomerang handled well and unlike most initial models of fighter aircraft, was well-armed from the start with two 20 mm cannon and four.303 machine guns (~7.7 mm), all mounted in the short, thick wings, and it was generously equipped with armour plating to protect the pilot.
The partnership between 4 and 5 Sqn Boomerangs and RNZAF Corsair fighter-bombers was said to be particularly effective.

Boomerangs are never used for hunting, since they are usually very lightweight and fly in a circular way.
World records are recorded by the World Boomerang Association and include 80 catches in 5 minutes, 5 catches in 14.6 seconds, and a distance record of 238 meters after which the boomerang flew back accurately to the thrower.
Boomerang is also the name of at least two TV channels owned by Cartoon Network, one in the US and one in the UK, which show classic animated cartoons, mainly from the Warner Brothers, MGM and Hanna-Barbera archives.

The Boomerang was not an exceptional fighter, it spent most of it's career as a ground support aircraft.
Boomerangs were the only plane available to the RAAF at the beginning of the war, but were quickly replaced with Spitfires from Britain and P-40 the USA.
Using parts from the CA Wirraway the Boomerang was designed and built in only three months.

Named the Boomerang, the new fighter was designed as an interceptor with a high rate of climb and good manoeuvrability.
Altogether, 250 Boomerangs were built and the various versions included 105 CA-12s, (A46-1/105), 95 CA-13s (A46-106/200), 49 CA-19s (A46-201/249), whilst the sole CA-14/CA-14A was numbered in the prototype range as A46-1001.
Also, it is interesting to record that a Boomerang at No 1 APU was modified to take two seats; the second position was placed inside the fuselage behind the pilot and was used by an observer to record instrument and performance data.

Oakey was one of the main bases for scrapping aircraft at War's end, and whilst no "mercy" was shown to the full aluminium structures as presented by Kittyhawks, Mustangs and Spitfires, the steel tubular structure of the Boomerang's fuselage was deemed to be of limited economic value to the scrappers.
This afforded a measure of salvation for many of the Boomerang frames which were sold off to local farmers who used them as a source of tubing, nuts and bolts and electrical components.
With the enthusiastic support of Greg Batts (who is restoring his own Boomerang - A46-54 to airworthy condition) and Ralph Cusack (better known for his work on the airworthy restoration of DAP Beaufort - A9-141), in 1983 Matthew announced that he had decided to restore "122" to airworthy condition.

An honoured guest at the recent Open Cockpit Weekend on 5-6 July was Matthew Denning and his magnificent CAC Boomerang VH-MHR.
Matt began restoring the Boomerang while he was still at school, and although he maintained his QAM membership throughout the following years, the Boomerang is a private project which culminated in a triumphant first flight on 14th February 2003.
One of the more outstanding aspects of the project was Matt's reverse engineering of the otherwise unavailable Boomerang wings and the subsequent supply of wings to three other Boomerang projects.

Fearing that they might be caught with little in the way of airborne resistance the CAC decided to produce an emergency fighter based on the Wirraway trainer.
The prototype used the wings, landing gear and tail unit of the trainer married to a completely new fuselage and made its first flight in 1942.

This was the world's sole airworthy example of a CAC Boomerang, especially imported for the airshow.
Chatted with Wayne Milburn (the Boomerang pilot) - he's a Kiwi, originally coming from Nelson which is just down the road.
By then the Boomerang was back, so I went to do some cockpit shots I'd arranged for earlier.
