| | EO Newsroom: New Images - CloudSat/CALIPSO Mission Set to Launch |
 | | The top image is the CloudSat satellite, while the bottom image is the CALIPSO satellite, which is short for “Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations.” Together, CALIPSO and CloudSat will provide new perspectives on Earth’s clouds and aerosols, answering questions about how they form, evolve, and affect water supply, climate, weather, and air quality. |
 | | The CALIPSO satellite will provide vertical, curtain-like images of the atmosphere on a global scale using a lidar. |
 | | (A lidar is similar to a radar, but uses short pulses of laser light instead of radio waves.) CALIPSO will allow scientists to determine the altitudes of clouds and aerosol layers (and how much the layers overlap), to identify the composition of clouds, and to estimate the abundance and sizes of aerosols. |
