Gendered age differences expected among Oscar nominees
Lincoln, whose research interests include gender differences in the labor market, was already aware from her previous research that women tend to begin their acting careers at a younger age than do men.
Lincoln noted that she chose 1949 as a cutoff for the first group because that was the last year for Hollywood's studio system that required actors to sign seven-year contracts obligating them to work in as many films as the studio desired.
When she factored in how long each of the first-time nominees for 2002 had been acting, she found an average of 13.5 years between first film and first nomination for women and an average of 13.7 years for men.

 The Business of Acting
I’ve spent most of my life in the entertainment business.  I’ve been an actor, a stunt man, a writer, a producer and a director.  Oh, I was also a personal manager handling celebrity talent.
I've spent years in acting schools, stunt school, extension classes from USC and UCLA and two years at Sherwood Oaks Experimental College, a private film school in Hollywood.  If I were to add up all the money I, alone, spent learning this information, I’m sure it would total well over $250,000.
The biggest reason is probably because I didn’t stick with the acting side of it long enough to take hold.  Many people have taken over ten, and even twenty, years before they became stars.
