CBMT is the CBC's television station in Montreal, Quebec.
CBMT was Montreal's second television station; previously English and French-language programs had shared time on CBFT, channel 2, which was both Montreal's and Canada's first television station.

It was in 1945 in Montreal that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation produced its first music recordings intended for broadcast abroad and in Canada.
For this reason CBC IS, shortly after its creation in 1945 as 'the voice of Canada abroad' with a mandate, among others, to be 'the continuing reflection abroad of Canadian culture,' resolved to correct this deficiency while meeting its own needs.
The orchestra, a CBC Montreal ensemble, was conducted by Beaudet.

CBC affiliates had first-choice in carrying CBC sustaining (non-sponsored) programs not included in their reserved time agreement, but the CBC did offer the remainder of any they wished to carry to the non-affiliates.
CBC's reliance on telegraph and telephone companies to physically achieve national network coverage began to fade in 1972 with the launching of the Anik Satellite and the renting of 3 channels to serve radio and television.
CBC adopted a policy of not accepting advertising on its radio networks - a change that could be facilitated without significant financial revenue loss, as commercial program sponsors had long-before departed for television.

In 2004, as the network continued to evolve and serve the country's diverse French population, the television operation moved to centralize ingest, storage and transmission in Montreal and revamp its facility.
The three original French channels were for the local Montreal transmitter and French Satellite Networks 1 and 2; the latter two covered the Eastern and Western Canadian provinces.
A facility was built in Montreal to serve the entire country.

As the DTV transition in Canada has started much later than the transition in the U.S. and is likely to finish much later as well, this is likely to have an impact on many users of TV broadcast channels, whether broadcast or new services, even after the U.S. DTV transition ends.
And although CBC/ Radio-Canada has scheduled some unique HD-originated programs, including CBC Television's popular documentary series "The Nature of Things," the sitcom "The Newsroom," as well as an upcoming 10-part documentary series, "Hockey: A People's History" and "Getting Along Famously," initially most of the content will be upconverted from SD.
