The CBD recognizes both the precautionary and ecosystem approaches to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.
The work of the CBD follows five broad thematic work programmes, defined according to the various major ecosystem types: marine and coastal biodiversity, agricultural biodiversity, forest biodiversity, the biodiversity of inland waters, and dry and sub-humid lands.
For example, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety adopted by the CBD is the first legally binding international agreement designed to address modern biotechnology and to govern the international movement of living modified organisms (LMO's).

The impact of CBD of injectables has been investigated in a few studies in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa and is increasingly being tested in various settings in Latin America.
CBD of DMPA proved a particularly effective strategy for increasing access to injectable contraception among rural, primarily indigenous women in Guatemala: 83 percent of the 500 Mayan clients received DMPA services from community-based educators and volunteers, compared with half of 692 women of European ancestry who participated in the study.
CBD workers actually achieved a higher continuation rate than MOH staff: 37 percent of the 640 rural women served by CBD workers were still using Cyclofem after one year, compared with 24 percent of the 2,817 urban and suburban women who visited health centers.

The decision of the CBD Parties to call on the UN General Assembly to act urgently to protect deep water corals and seamounts is particularly noteworthy.

There is a surprising lack of awareness and understanding (on the part of both government and civil society) of what the CBD requires and of which commitments relate to forest biodiversity.

Specific progress was made with regard to bringing the CBD Addis Ababa Principles and Guidelines for Sustainable Use of Biodiversity to the attention of CITES authorities and encouraging their use.
