Commodore DOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Commodore DOS, aka CBM DOS, was the disk operating system used with Commodore's 8-bit computers.
Unlike most other DOS systems before or since, CBM DOS was integrated in internal ROM chips in the floppy disk drives*, i.e.
Inside Commodore DOS was a popular reference guide to the CBM 1541's CBM DOS 2.6.

Most of the commands are the same as the 'other' DOS, so if you use this, you can sit down in front of a PC and actually look like you use one all the time.
All you need do is point and click using a mouse in the Joystick mode, a joystick, or the up/down arrows and the return key.

If you started the Commander through SC.EXE and executed a DOS command when one of the panels was an external panel then a strange path would be offered when you tried to copy a file to the external drive and the manual file name conversion box would give you a blank file name.
DOS file names are turned into lowercase while being converted to Commodore format; you can switch this off with "Keep uppercase chars".
Wide DOS panels are now very similar to Full DOS panels, the only difference is that, in Wide panels, file names are not split into the name and extension parts.

A reason for that, apart from taking load from the host computer, is the serial bus itself: it's based on the IEEE-488 bus used in the PET-series (although CBM serial is slower and has fewer features), and requires 'intelligent peripherals' to handle the protocol.
As mentioned earlier, CBM diskdrives are 'intelligent peripherals' and come with their own CIAs, PLA, RAM, ROM and CPU.
Thus these chips' functions are similar to those in other Commodore computers and peripherals: the CIA is used for the drive's serial bus, and the PLA provides logic equations for adress decoding (required since the drive's 6502AD CPU also has 64K address space, shared between I/O, RAM and ROM).
