  CCIR 601 - TheBestLinks.com - Colour, Chrominance, Hertz, ITU-R, ...
CCIR 601 is the old name of a standard published by the CCIR (now ITU-R) for encoding interlaced analogue video signals in digital form.
The CCIR 601 signal can be ### regarded as if it is a digitally encoded analog component video signal, and thus includes data for the horizontal and vertical sync and blanking intervals.
The CCIR 601 video raster format has been re-used in a number of later standards, including MPEG.

CCIR 601 uses interlaced scan, so each field only has half as much vertical resolution (e.g., 243 lines in NTSC).
The CCIR 601 (NTSC) data rate is 165 Mbps.

601 (last version is 601-2) specifies the the image format, acquisition semantic, and parts of the coding for digital "standard" television signals.
It does not specify the number of lines for both systems; this can be found in CCIR Rep. 624-4, which gives a detailed description of all parameters of the analog television systems, as NTSC, PAL, SECAM and all of the derivates.
The gamma for the different television systems are specified in CCIR Report 624-4.

 EBU Technical Review
Despite endorsement by the SMPTE, EBU and CCIR, the success of Recommendation 601 was not rapid.
Some of those involved in the development of Recommendation 601 were naturally disappointed that their excellent work was not being implemented rapidly: I recall a fairly desperate suggestion that broadcasters should be asked to sign a declaration that they were not interested in digital composite VTRs!
Furthermore, digital TV transmissions allow broadcasters who use Recommendation 601 throughout their studios to deliver high quality pictures without using PAL or NTSC at any point between the camera and the consumer.
