Compact disc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A user-recordable CD for data storage, CD-R, was introduced in the early 1990s, and it became the de facto standard for exchange and archiving of computer data and music.
The information on a standard CD is encoded as a spiral track of pits moulded into the top of the polycarbonate layer (The areas between pits are known as lands).
The difference in height between pits and lands is a sixth of the wavelength of the laser light, leading to a third-wavelength phase difference between the light reflected from a pit and from its surrounding land.

All other text is converted to computer-readable form, which is viewed as essential both for precise retrieval and for flexible use of the retrieved information.
In comparison, full text usually lacks zones where information has a predictable meaning, nor are most writers as disciplined as bibliographers or directory editors in ensuring that terms are used consistently on page 5 and page 500.
The top and the bottom of each long text file may also serve as locations for information that is not in the text itself but would be helpful to the user, such as a topical overview of the database at the top and a glossary of terms at the bottom.

The Finder Text is edited by Christie Carson and Jay Halio; in addition, the CD-ROM provides modern editions of both Quarto and Folio texts (both edited by Jay Halio in the Cambridge series).
The most useful thing about the texts is that they are in one place together: the edited text of Shakespeare's play are substantially the same as those in the Cambridge print editions, and the later adaptations provide nothing beyond the unquestioned usefulness of a searchable electronic text.

 Halfbakery: CD-Text
On many cheap CD players, there is no absolute positioning available other than the very center of the disk; all other positions are found by reading "markers" on the disk which say where the head is currently, and going inward or outward from that.
Additionally, CD's are written with a constant linear density; the use of a spiral track means that it's possible two read/store a fractional number of sectors per revolution.
While the techniques used to make the master for a hologram are probably different from those normally used to make the master for a CD, there'd be nothing preventing someone from taking part of a hologram master and putting it in the middle of a CD master.
