The CDC 160 computer, introduced in 1960 was the first truly small computer to hit the market.
The CDC 160 was sufficiently successful that CDC followed with the 160A and the 8092.
The base configuration for a CDC 160A cost $110,000 (as remembered by George R. Gonzalez); this gave you the CPU, minimal memory, high-speed paper-tape reader, medium speed punch, and a flexowriter.

CDC was one of the eight major computer companies through most of the 1960s; along with CDC these were IBM, Burroughs, NCR, General Electric, Honeywell, RCA, and UNIVAC.
CDC decided to fight back, but Norris agreed with Cray in thinking that the company had become too ossified to be able to quickly design anything competitive.

The CDC 6600 was a mainframe computer from Control Data Corporation, first manufactured in 1965.
CDC's first products were based on the machines designed at ERA, which Seymour Cray had been asked to update after moving to CDC.
The machines were based on the simple 12-bit CDC 160A, which ran much slower than the CPU, gathering up data and "squirting" it into main memory at high speed via dedicated hardware.

To handle the 'household' tasks which other designs put in the CPU, Cray included in the 6600 ten other processors, based partly on his earlier computer, the CDC 160A.
When the main CPU needed to perform some sort of I/O, it instead loaded a small program into one of these other machines.
