CDC 8600 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The "natural successor" to the CDC 6600 and CDC 7600, the 8600 was intended to be about 10 times as fast as the 7600, already the fastest computer on the market.
The 8600 design effort was eventually cancelled in 1974, and Control Data moved on to the CDC STAR-100 series instead.
The 8600 was the first CDC design to move to ASCII-based processing, and therefore used a 64-bit word (eight bytes) instead of the earlier 60-bit word (ten 6-bit characters) used on the 6600 and 7600.

Control Data Corporation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CDC was one of the eight major computer companies through most of the 1960s; along with CDC these were IBM, Burroughs, NCR, General Electric, Honeywell, RCA, and UNIVAC.
Unfortunately the 8600 was "old school" in terms of physical construction, using individual components soldered to circuit boards.
CDC decided to fight back, but Norris agreed with Cray in thinking that the company had become too ossified to be able to quickly design anything competitive.

The 8600 proposed in 1968 was targeted to have 4 processors, an 8 nanosecond clock, and built from discrete circuits.
As the team tried to solve the problems of heat and speed, CDC was building its STAR under Jim Thornton, and fighting IBM in court.
It would be interesting to know whether the 8600 architecture resembled the Cray 1 architecture.

CDC 7600   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
The CDC 7600 was the Seymour Cray-designed successor to the CDC 6600, extending Control Data's dominance of the supercomputer field into the 1970s.
From the period from about 1969 to 1975, the CDC 7600 was generally regarded as the fastest computer in the world at the time excepting specialized units.
The successor CDC 8600 was never completed, and Seymour Cray went on to form his own company, Cray Research.

Even as the 1604 was starting to ship in 1960, he had already moved on to designing its "replacement", the CDC 6600.
There must be more to the story than just that, as he had been working on the latest machine in the series, the CDC 8600.
Ignoring the ideas of the CDC 8600 as too complex he went for a uniprocessor design - the Cray-1 (1976), the first was sold within a month to a lab in Los Alamos for $8.8 million.

Partner violence is an important issue to address within the context of adolescence, particularly for girls in that domestic violence is the number one public health threat to women in their adult years.
One-quarter of all new HIV infections in the U.S. are estimated to occur in young people under the age of 21(Advocates for Youth, 1998).
Sixty-four percent of adolescents between the ages of 13 to 19 reported with HIV are females, and 84 percent are minority youth (CDC, 2000d).

 Tribute to Seymour Cray
The last system that Seymour worked on at CDC was the 8600 -- work that demonstrated his clear vision of the challenges facing the high performance industry.
He began work on the 8600 in 1968, and realized that improved clock speed alone would not allow him to reach his performance goals.
When he started Cray Research in 1972, he shelved the 8600 design primarily because at that time he felt that the software issues were too great for the industry to handle and concluded that greater performance could be achieved in a uniprocessor by implementing vector capabilities.

During this period Cray had become increasingly annoyed at what he saw as corporate interference from CDC management, and decided that in order to continue development he would have to move from St. Paul and get away as far as possible.
The 8600 was running into similar difficulties and Cray eventually decided that the only solution was to start over fresh.
In a reversal of CDC's operations, R&D and manufacturing were based in Chippewa Falls while the business headquarters were in Minneapolis.

The Free Information Society - Seymour Cray Biography
There, he was placed on a team that worked on designing a successor to the ERA 1103 and finished it in 1960, calling it the CDC 1604.
In response to weak attempts by competition to outdo his design, Cray designed the CDC 7600, which proved to be 5x faster than the 6600.
His wish was granted and CDC constructed a new lab on land that Cray owned.

Nevertheless, major health agencies, such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the United States, have studied the syndrome.
As a result, a revised CDC case definition for CFS was published in 1994 that lists major and minor criteria for diagnosis.
The major criteria of CFS include the presence of chronic and persistent fatigue for at least six months; fatigue that does not improve with rest; and fatigue that causes significant interference with the patient's daily activities.

Through a series of acquisitions of ERA, he eventually was working on the design of the UNIVAC 1103 for the Sperry Corp. In 1957, he cofounded Control Data Corporation (CDC) where he designed and built one of the first transistorized computers, the CDC 1604.
This first machine was so successful that, in 1962, CDC built a laboratory for Seymour in his native Chippewa Falls.
In 1972, while building the CDC 8600 multiprocessor, he left CDC to found his own company, Cray Research Inc (CRI).

When Cray left CDC in 1972 to start his own company, Cray Research he abandoned the multiprocessor architecture in favour of vector processing, a split that divides supercomputing camps to this day.

He anticipated the need for parallelism in computation and came up with the CDC 8600 which had four processors, all sharing the same memory.
