Gracenote - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The CDDB technology became popular in the 1990s, as it allowed MP3s to be automatically annotated with artist, album, title, and other information during the process of ripping from CD.
CDDB was then spun out of Escient and then in July of 2000 renamed Gracenote.
CDDB claims that license grant was an error, and had modified the website in 1998 to avoid mention of the database's copyright status.

CDDB - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CDDB (which stands for Compact Disc Database) is a database for software applications to look up audio CD (compact disc) information over the Internet.
The need for CDDB is a direct consequence of the original design of the CD, which was conceived as an evolution of the gramophone record, and did not consider the audio tracks as data files to be identified and indexed.
CDDB was invented by Ti Kan as a local database which was delivered with his popular xmcd music player application.

The CDDB concept was pioneered by xmcd and is now embraced as a standard by many other CD and music-related applications.
CDDB access is free of charge, but you can use this feature only if your system is connected to the Internet, either via a dial-up link or a dedicated connection.
If the Internet CDDB servers do not have the information for some of your CDs, you are encouraged to enter the information, and then submit it to the master database for others to share.

 washingtonpost.com: CDDB Strikes A Chord
On an Internet-connected computer, the CDDB service (www.cddb.com) works near-transparently: In a few seconds, it computes the time signature of the tracks on a CD, matches that pattern to a database of song and album titles, and displays the right names in your music program.
But the developers were able to finesse this, and CDDB took off.
Tuesday night, for instance, CDDB served up the wrong title for P.J. Harvey's new CD and botched the titles of a songs on popular CDs from U2 and Pearl Jam.

Access denied: A copyright battle | CNET News.com
More immediately, the case will determine the fate of two alternative CD databases--Freedb.org and MusicBrainz.org--that were created after several programmers on the Internet realized that Gracenote had essentially fenced off the original CDDB by changing the terms of the licenses.
Like Gracenote's CDDB, the two open-source services allow people to download information from the Internet on just about any audio CD they insert into their computer.
While several cases have established such copyright protections for databases, the CDDB is fundamentally different from other collections of information created by companies, said Eben Moglen, professor of law and legal history for Columbia Law School and general counsel for the Free Software Foundation.

Foetusized's Article on CDDB, freedb, and CDValet
Escient bought the open-source CDDB project, and have come up with several ways to leverage the technology and the database itself into ways of making a profit.
Of the available CDDB clients, I personally have used the shareware client program CDValet on two Windows boxes (home and work) for many years now, back to when the original CDDB was still open-source and non-profit.
Partly due to being cut off from CDDB access by Gracenote, GLH Software has removed all content about CDValet from their site; before this, they had continued to offer the last version for download, with a free registration key posted on their site (with permission to freely distribute this key).
