CNN.com - Inside the mind of the CEO President - July 29, 2002
After unveiling his new policies for cracking down on deceitful CEOs to Wall Street a few weeks ago, he was approached by an audience member eager to air his own proposals - a college-professor type, as Bush tells it, with ideas both windy and unwieldy.
Back in April, when the Dow hovered around 10,000, a White House economic adviser told the President at a social gathering that "there's no reason this market shouldn't be around 7500." According to an eyewitness, Bush made a face, turned and walked away, as if the subject bored or annoyed him.
Bush may cling to his belief that the market's woes won't affect the basic soundness of the economy, but he knows from his father's experience that politicians who don't appear to take voters' pocketbook fears seriously pay for their callousness at the polls.

Amazon.com - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Amazon.com succeeded in stalling the unions' efforts in part by appealing to workers' fear of finding jobs at the end of the dot com boom.
Duane Stillwell, president of the Prewitt Organizing Fund, said: "It's unfortunate that this vaunted high-tech company is just saying the same crude things that factory owners have been saying for 100 years about unions.
They're just scaring people out of wanting to do the right thing." Critics allege that Amazon.com's business practices are similar to those of the retail chain Wal-Mart, in that Amazon.com offers low prices for goods by underpaying its workers and cutting profits to publishers and other suppliers.
