The first cyclotron in Sweden was a small 80 cm device built in 1938 at the Nobel Institute in Stockholm and capable of accelerating deuterons to 7 MeV.
Meanwhile, CERN was founded and construction began for its first two accelerators: the synchrocyclotron (SC) and the proton synchrotron (PS).
The decision to send the equipment to Sweden was taken by CERN Council in December 1982, and additional funding for the ring was included in the 1983/4 budget of the Swedish Ministry of Education.

By January 1931 a four-inch brass cyclotron built by another graduate student, M. Stanley Livingston, had accelerated protons to 80,000 electron volts with only a thousand volts on its electrodes, and Lawrence was already raising money for a bigger magnet.
Because cyclotrons seemed a relatively inexpensive path to high energies, laboratories all over the world built them in the 1930s, first in other American universities and then in Japan (RIKEN's was the first to function outside the U.S.) and in the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, France, and Sweden.
Parts of the 184-Inch Cyclotron under construction in 1941 were diverted to defense work, and by the time it was possible to complete the massive structure, it was looking more than a little ungainly.

 Josiane Guex Leaves CERN after 45 Years
CERN was then a building site erecting the premises for housing the Laboratory and its first accelerator, the Synchro-Cyclotron.
Josiane left CERN at the end of May. She could have carried on for a few more years because she is only 62.
She also says she is aware that being at CERN is a wonderful stroke of luck, it means working with extraordinary people and is culturally enriching.

With his team he made a large number of important and fundamental discoveries including the discovery of the beta decay process of the positive pion and the first observation of muon capture by free hydrogen.
In 1976 Rubbia proposed that the CERN synchrotron be modified to allow beams of accelerated protons and antiprotons collide head on so that sufficient energy would be released for the weak bosons to materialize.
On December 17, 1987 Professor Rubbia was appointed as the Director General of the CERN from January 1, 1989 for a period of five years.

The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) was originally going to built along with a new CERN centre in Europe, separate from the Geneva research centre, but a series of political arguments resulted in the decision that it be built alongside the existing Synchro-Cyclotron and Proton Synchrotron accelerators at the Geneva site, in the 1970s.
The SPS is a circular accelerator, 6 km in circumference, buried underground.
As a proton-antiproton collider in the 1980s, it provided CERN with one of its greatest moments - the first observations of the W and Z particles, the carriers of the weak force.

 Sir John Adams (1920-1984)
John Adams (1920-1984) was the 'father' of the giant particle accelerators which have made CERN the leader in the field of high energy physics.
He came to CERN in September 1953 and was appointed director of the PS division in 1954 at the age of 34, becoming the leader for the world's biggest particle accelerator project.
In 1971 he came back to CERN and served until 1975 as Director-General of what was then called Laboratory II, responsible for the design and construction of the SPS accelerator.

During the recent PANIC99 particle/nuclear physics conference (CERN Courier September), CELSIUS/WASA, a new detector facility for the CELSIUS cooler storage ring, was inaugurated.
The inauguration talk was given by Erwin Gabathuler and the facility was shown to conference participants during tours of the the Svedberg Laboratory ­ a Swedish national facility for accelerator-based research.
The magnets for the 82 m circumference CELSIUS ring ­ formerly used in the CERN g-2 experiment (to measure the muon's magnetism) and ICE (beam cooling) experiment ­ were brought from CERN to Uppsala in 1983.

The only access to the site from France is via a customs manned post which can only be used to for transferring equipment between the Meyrin site and other CERN sites in France.
This is in fact the only permitted route for such transfers.
Personnel travelling between the sites without equipment must use the normal customs posts on the border and enter or leave the Meyrin site via the entrance in Switzerland.

If you go to the library or the web, you can find lots of information about "cyclotrons", as these early devices were named; they were called that because they used magnetic and electric fields to move charged particles around in circles.
Once the basic cyclotron design was modified to account for an increasing mass of the particles, however, physicists found they could get the expected speeds again.
All the big modern circular accelerators, such as Fermilab or CERN, are based on a design which assumes that mass (or momentum) increases at relativistic speeds.

My first visit to CERN was on my own for three weeks or so in December 1957 when I worked under Alec Merrison (later Sir Alec and Vice-Chancellor of Bristol) helping to set up the first pion beam in the Proton Room.
At CERN we were effectively a joint Harwell-UCL team, with Colin Whitehead and Roger Hanna from AERE on long-term attachments, assisted by occasional technical staff from Harwell, and the UCL folk all initially mostly on relatively short visits.
I remember the container being unloaded under the eye of a customs official and one of the first pieces to be unloaded, and not on the manifest, was a ‘High Chair’ for a young Hanna, which he kindly ignored.
