	HYPER-CEST MRI breaks new ground in molecular imaging
		In the new Science paper, the Pines and Wemmer collaboration combined the xenon biosensors with CEST technology, which was developed as a contrast method for boosting the MRI contrast from protons.
		CEST is based on the exchange of protons that takes place between water molecules and other molecules in the body.
		While effective under certain conditions, CEST is limited by the fast relaxation time of protons, which necessitates the need for large magnetic fields to decrease relaxation effects and increase the difference between saturated and non-saturated MRI signals.

		CEST is a cooperative effort between Notre Dame’s Colleges of Science and Engineering, fostering interdisciplinary environmental research and education by providing cutting-edge analytical technologies needed to address complex environmental problems.
		CEST is unique in that Notre Dame faculty and students may use the instruments for class work or research without instrument-time charges, although there are charges associated with “consumables”.
		CEST also hosts student field trips from local junior high and high school programs and serves as a resource for undergraduate analytical chemistry laboratories.

		By selectively saturating a particular proton signal (associated with a particular molecule or CEST agent) that is in exchange with surrounding water molecules, the MRI signal from the surrounding bulk water molecules is also attenuated.
		Shown in Figure 1 are CEST images obtained of a tube of 100 mM L-arginine at pH=7 acquired with a saturating pulse applied at +2 ppm (Figure 1, left) and -2 ppm (Figure 1, middle) offset from the bulk water proton resonance.
