Former ranks of the Canadian Forces - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The rank structure for these services were based on the services of the British military, the Royal Navy, the Royal Air Force, and the British Army.
Almost all vestiges of naval tradition were lost when the Canadian Forces were unified, however, naval rank titles did remain for the personnel of the new Maritime Command, though they became associated with the new CF insignia which was largely drawn from Army and Air Force traditions.
The rank of Corporal in the Army was especially downgraded in terms of responsibility; before Unification a Canadian Corporal was the equivalent of a sergeant in most other armies due to his responsiblity as a section commander.

The CF reserve force comprises the Primary and Supplementary Reserves, the Canadian Rangers and the Cadet Instructor Cadre and is represented, though not commanded, at the national level by the Chief of Reserves and Cadets (a Major General or Rear Admiral).
The CF maintains a "total force" policy as outlined in the 1994 Defence White Paper, where reservists are (in theory) trained to the level of and interchangeable with their regular force counterparts.
Rank insignia is also worn on all slip-ons worn by Navy and Air Force personnel, but only by Army officers; Army NCMs wear miniature metal rank insignia on the shirt collar and plain epaulets.

Officers displayed their rank on slip-ons on the epaulets of the shirt or jacket; NCMs wore small OD versions of their rank insignia stitched in the centre of the upper sleeve, although for a period in the 1980s these were stitched onto slip-ons, ostensibly to save wear-and-tear on the uniforms.
