 MARITIMES SCANNING SITE
CFB Greenwood in the Annapolis Valley is operated by 14 Wing and is home to Maritime Patrol squadrons operating CP-140 Aurora (and CP-140A Arcturus variety) patrol aircraft, and also to a search and rescue/transport squadron operating CC-130 Hercules fixed wing aircraft and the new Cormorant helicopter.
CFB Halifax is primarily the home to Canada's east coast navy and hosts the operational and support fleet.
The former CFB Shearwater is now a component of the Halifax base and a unit called 12 Wing operates the air base, primarily hosting operational and training naval helicopter squadrons using the CH-124 Sea King helicopter.

 Sustainment Sites - Canadian Red Cross
On July 6, CFB Trenton was closed and 350 Kosovars destined for settlement in Ontario and other parts of Canada were moved to Kingston.
At CFB Kingston, the Kosovars were housed in two large dormitory buildings - Sherman Hall and Lewis Hall - each capable of housing about 400 people in private rooms.
Volunteers have come to CFB Kingston from all walks of life, a few from the Canadian Forces who want to serve the Red Cross after they've finished their regular jobs.

 Reception Centres- Canadian Red Cross
The first chartered flights from Macedonia arrived at CFB Trenton, Ontario on May 4 and at CFB Greenwood, Nova Scotia on May 5.
CFB Trenton had a dual role -- as both a reception centre and sustainment site.
A total of 574 Red Cross volunteers participated in the eight-week operation at CFB Greenwood that ended on June 25.

 Pipers & Pipe Bands
CWO Cairns, before his retirement in 1981, was instrumental in organizing and developing the Canadian Forces School of Piping at CFB Ottawa.
The Royal Canadian Navy's first pipe band was established on October 10th, 1954, and was underwritten by the ship's fund of HMCS Cape Breton that bought the original training equipment and paid the instructor's fees.
The Air Command Pipes and Drums of CFB Ottawa was among four regular and reserve pipe bands selected to participate in Canada's salute to the United States Bicentennial in Philadelphia on May 29th and 30th, 1976.

The Regiment's primary operational task is the provision of sustainment engineering such as water supply, route maintenance and construction, vertical construction and the provision of utilities.
Common tasks to support CFB Gagetown include demolition and mine warfare training, provision of battlefield simulation, equipment and firepower demonstrations and the provision of engineer advice and support to courses.
In April 1999, the Regiment established and operated the Kosovar refugee camp in CFB Gagetown under OP PARASOL where 1100 refugees were eventually housed for four months.

 Agree Dispute Resolution, Experience in Facilitating Partnering Workshops
Rick Russell and Gary Furlong co-facilitated this workshop at CFB London, Ontario to introduce facilities managers at various bases and armouries across Ontario to a new facilities management scheme for the maintenance of buildings in southwestern Ontario.
This was the first project of its kind using the Partnering process, with participants rating the process excellent at the workshop’s conclusion.
Rick Russell and Rick Weiler co-facilitated a workshop in Fredericton, New Brunswick for a project involving the construction of a Central Heating Facility at CFB Gagetown.

In July 1972, it was given the exclusive role of training all aircrew and technical crews for the tactical helicopter and rescue Squadrons.
To accomplish this new role, the flying portion of the Squadron was relocated to CFB Gagetown.
In July 1990, the Squadron developed a closer relationship with the Air Reserves when the CFB Gagetown Detachment of the CFB Chatham Air Reserve Augmentation Flight (ARAF) took up residence in the Squadron.

 Training and Recruitment
Officers in the RESO program are required to spend 13 weeks in the summer for two summers, training at CFB Gagetown for three phases of training.
This training is conducted in two or three week blocks and can be done over several summers.
Occupational training (QL3) takes place at three military formations: CFB Gagetown, CFB Borden and MTSC Aldershot.

Operation PARASOL: In a highly successful joint humanitarian operation with Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Red Cross, the Canadian Forces provided temporary accommodations to approximately 5,000 Kosovar refugees between April and August 1999.
The Kosovar refugees were received at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Greenwood and Trenton.
Following a brief medical examination, they were then accommodated at CF facilities at Aldershot, Borden, Gagetown, Greenwood, Halifax, Kingston and Trenton.

Bill Coleman, a former army private, said that he and others were ordered in 1961 to bury drums of toxic chemicals they had dredged from the bottom of Peach Lake inside an artillery range at Camp Aldershot.
Coleman, 69, said he and his colleagues hauled up the barrels in the lake, causing an oily material to rise to the surface.
Coleman, who has suffered from bowel, prostate and skin cancer, went to the training camp with the contractors to point out where he thought the burial site was located.

The 2004 Fall Training Workshop and Annual General Meeting - The 2004 Fall Training Workshop will open at 09:00 am Saturday, November 06th, at CFB Aldershot in the Valley, the AGM will be at the same location on Sunday, November 7th, starting at 9am.
Those team members who are planning on arriving on Friday night, should notify a member of the Executive, no later than Wednesday of that week, so that we can ensure that we have enough rooms available.
We have made arrangements for three classrooms at Aldershot, so there may be up to three different things going on at the same time.

For somebody from Yarmouth, it's not an easy trip to come to Halifax and go back home that day, and the same for the people in the Valley.
CFB Greenwood recognized Peacekeeping Day, I was there last year and spoke at it.
I don't need to tell you about the military presence in the Valley, from Aldershot to CFB Greenwood to Cornwallis, which is closed, but it played a significant role in wartime, so I'm just wondering if the province is planning to do anything down that way.
