 Science Fair Projects - CFB Petawawa
The base was founded in 1904 as the Petawawa Military Camp (Camp Petawawa) when the Department of Militia and Defence purchased 22,430 acres (91 km²) of mostly agricultural property from local residents.
Between December 1914 and May 1916, Camp Petawawa was used as an internment camp for 750 German and Austrian prisoners of war.
Camp Petawawa was heavily used during and after the Second World War and became the home base for the Canadian Airborne Regiment during the Cold War.

The origin of the name PETAWAWA is lost in antiquity, but legend has it that it's an Algonquin Indian word pronounced "PETWEWE" which translates roughly to "where one hears a sound like this" refering to the roar of the white water rapids of the river.
The land occupied by CFB Petawawa was purchased by the Canadian Government in 1904, and the first troops arrived for training during the summer of 1905.
In 1946 the first regular army units began arriving in Petawawa and it was established as a permanent camp.

CFB Petawawa will be one of only two Canadian Forces bases that will host Canada's new Chinook helicopters, MP Cheryl Gallant says.
"What this means to CFB Petawawa and the surrounding community are another 500 to 600 military personnel which will add to the base's total strength by up to 2,000 over the next four to five years.

The Township of Petawawa was incorporated in 1865, and the Village of Petawawa was incorporated in 1961.
On July 1, 1997, the Village and the Township amalgamated to become the Town of Petawawa with a population today of over 15,000, the largest municipality in Renfrew County.The earliest settlement recorded in Petawawa was by the group of Algonkin Indians known as "people of the great river".
The first survey for Petawawa Township was in 1857 united with Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay and Alice Townships in 1858 before finally separating on its own in 1865.

The Regiment moved from CFB Edmonton to CFB Petawawa and was downsized in the process, losing its gunners and engineers.
With the move to CFB Petawawa, the regiment's chain of command lengthened, because it was now a unit under the Special Service Force and one link further from the most senior army commander.
On the other hand, the move to CFB Petawawa did allow for closer supervision of the CAR, because it was now under the direction of the commander of the Special Service Force.

CFB PETAWAWA, Ont. - CFB Petawawa is known as "the training ground for the warriors," and on Saturday night, 43 warriors came home from war-torn Afghanistan.
The service men and women that arrived on Saturday were a trickle of the 1,300 soldiers who will return to Petawawa over the next few weeks.
While about 400 Petawawa soldiers are being sent to Afghanistan to replace the returning soldiers, the base doesn't expect another major deployment to Afghanistan until August 2008.

These images were taken during a rare oppourtnity to attend a Canadian military exercise held at CFB Petawawa located in central Ontario.
This exercise was participated mainly by artillery and infantry troops, the CH-146 Griffon (militarized Bell 412) helicopters performed the roles of tactical airlifting by picking up ground troops and inserting them into the battle ground as dictated by the commanders.
I've worked in Petawawa for many yeras and these are some of the best helicopter pictures I have seen in a long time.

A group of emergency response soldiers has returned to their home bases after staying at CFB Trenton for a number of days in response to the attacks in the United States.
Captain Paul Doucette, public affairs officer at CFB Trenton, said about 160 soldiers from CFB Petawawa and Kingston returned to their respective bases late on Sept. 14.
Captain Ron Carson, public affairs officer for CFB Petawawa, said members of DART were sent to Trenton on Wednesday but the group was recalled on Friday.
