CFB Shearwater is the birthplace and primary base for naval aviation in Canada, and plays host to 12 Wing (12 Wing Shearwater) which was formerly organized as Maritime Air Group, Canadian Armed Forces.
CFB Shearwater is the second-oldest military aerodrome in Canada.
Shearwater's primary mission remains as a heliport for the navy's Atlantic fleet.

Shearwater's varied and colourful history reflects the evolution of flying in Canada and indeed the growth of Canada's Air Force.
Shearwater was originally created as a sea base in August 1918, when the small promontory in Halifax harbour's Eastern Passage, known as Baker's Point, became U.S. Naval Air Station Halifax.
HMCS Shearwater was also the birthplace of Canadian naval aviation and from 1948-1968 was home to Canada's naval air squadrons when not embarked on Aircraft carriers.

 Shearwater History - CFB Shearwater
When the operational Tracker squadron, MR 880, was transferred from CFB Shearwater to CFB Summerside PEI in the summer of 1981, it absorbed the Tracker training function and 406 Squadron was redesigned HT 406, responsible only for Sea King aircrew and technician training.
On 3 September1974, HS 50 was deactivated and two former RCAF squadrons with proud WW II lineages were reactivated at CFB Shearwater as HS 423 and HS 443.
Subsequently CFB Shearwater came under the jurisdiction of Air Command with command and control delegated to Maritime Air Group Headquarters in Halifax.

 MARITIMES SCANNING SITE
CFB Greenwood in the Annapolis Valley is operated by 14 Wing and is home to Maritime Patrol squadrons operating CP-140 Aurora (and CP-140A Arcturus variety) patrol aircraft, and also to a search and rescue/transport squadron operating CC-130 Hercules fixed wing aircraft and the new Cormorant helicopter.
CFB Halifax is primarily the home to Canada's east coast navy and hosts the operational and support fleet.
The former CFB Shearwater is now a component of the Halifax base and a unit called 12 Wing operates the air base, primarily hosting operational and training naval helicopter squadrons using the CH-124 Sea King helicopter.

The trip to Gander, Newfoundland began with a bus ride to CFB Shearwater, where we were delayed for approximately 24 hrs due to Herc breakdown.
In Newfoundland, we were met by members of CFB Borden Pipes and Drums, and 48th Highlanders of Canada Pipes and Drums.
Once the runway lights were turned back on at CFB Shearwater we were finally able to land and finish our return trip by bus.

The rumor around Shearwater is that the long runway, 16 \ 34, is supposed to open the end of July.
With the loss of the aircraft at Shearwater, we have moved off to use the rental aircraft at Waterville and Greenwood so training is ongoing and members are remaining current.
The zone is awaiting approval from CFB Shearwater for a new location for our search equipment lockers.

His Worship Peter Kelly, Mayor of Halifax, met with the soldiers of CFB Gagetown’s Immediate Reaction Unit at 12 Wing Shearwater on Saturday, 4 October 2003; a few hours before the unit was scheduled to return to their home unit.
The Immediate Reaction Units (IRU) from CFB Gagetown was dispatched from CFB Gagetown in the few hours after Hurricane Juan hit the area.
The IRU arrived at their makeshift camp located in the 12 Wing Shearwater Recreation Centre late on Tuesday and started clean-up tasks in the downtown Dartmouth area on the same night.

Last Spring, Shearwater's long runway was purchased by the Canada Lands Corporation, as part of a parcel of surplus federal land.
Councillor Hetherington said MP Stoffer failed to do his job as NDP defence critic and now CFB Shearwater has been closed out and the lands sold to the Canada Lands Corporation.
They tried to negotiate the purchase of the former Shearwater lands to ensure they would be developed in a way which would benefit not only local residents, but HRM as a whole.

Canada Lands acquired 900 acres of the former CFB Shearwater from the Department of National Defence (DND) in 2002.
Earlier in 2003, it became apparent that offshore oilrig repairs in the Halifax harbour were infringing on the flight path for the runway, which had been retained by DND.

After 26 years at CFB Greenwood, the Regional Cadet Instructor School’s Nova Scotia Training Centre has a new home at CFB Shearwater.
“I’ve been to both bases on course and they are quite similar and the two hour drive to Shearwater is much more enjoyable than the three hour drive to Greenwood.”
There is another advantage to being located in Shearwater “The Regional Cadet Support Unit (Atlantic) is headquartered here,” says Porter.
