Canadians celebrate 'Science Success Story' on a Hawaiian Mountain Top - National Research Council Canada
The CFHT, located on the barren and frigid 4200-metre summit of Mauna Kea, is celebrating over two decades of scientific discovery and technological innovation.
It is marking its 21st birthday with events that include an open house, lectures and scientific meetings that celebrate the past, present, and future of a scientific facility that, a recent study has shown, has been the most scientifically productive 4 metre telescope in the world.
The CFHT, which is a collaboration of Canada, France and the University of Hawaii, was the first large telescope to be constructed on Mauna Kea.

CFHT's staff includes experts in a wide variety of fields, including mechanics, electronics, computer science, optics, and astrophysics.
The role of CFHT is to operate, maintain, and upgrade all the observatory systems; to make sure that the telescope remains competitive; and to provide first-rate instrumentation to astronomers in Canada, France, and at the University of Hawai'i.

University of Hawaii -- The Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) is one of the oldest facilities on the summit of Mauna-Kea.
The result of a fruitful collaboration between CFHT and institutes in France and Canada, MegaPrime is a completely new structure installed on top of the telescope, equipped with specially designed optics and a unique made-in-France digital camera of 340 megapixels called MegaCam.
It will be possible to look for small objects moving around planets, or the outskirts of the solar system; astronomers will be able to watch the explosions of dying stars in remote galaxies, study the ripples of space due to unseen matter, or witness new and mysterious phenomena yet to be discovered.

The scientists and the institutes involved in the MEGACAM project are L. Vigroux from the Commisariat a l'Energie Atomique (Saclay, France), D. Crampton from the DAO, Y. Mellier from the Observatoire Midi-Pyrenees (Toulouse, France) and Nick Kaiser from CITA.

Competitive Site and Timescale: An 8m CFHT
The first choice to achieve our scientific goals of a wide field 8m telescope is to work within the existing CFHT partnership, roughly along the lines of the plans recently prepared by J. Espiard and W.
The CFHT partners have been vigorously yet carefully examining the Telescope's future in the near- and long-terms through the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), the Next Generation CFHT Committee, the Board, as well as through national committees and planning exercises.
But no scientific case can be made that it would be undesirable to replace the aging CFHT 3.6 m as soon as possible with a modern 8m instrument, with some twelve months of down-time.

The CFHT now has a "minimum time" policy; ie., an instrument must remain on the telescope at least 4 nights, otherwise it will not be scheduled.
A CFHT proposal has the reputation of having one of the toughest scientific justifications to write in all of astronomy.
Indeed, one often hears from cynics that a CFHT scientific justification (hereafter SJ) is essentially a journal paper with blanks for the observational results.

This is a very complex issue because, at its essence, it involves matters related to Hawaiian Sovereignty and control of "ceded lands" (land which formerly belonged to the Kingdom of Hawaii that passed to the Territory and then to the State of Hawaii).
Advantages of moving CFHT more aggressively toward a WF-IR capability include the fact that there is still considerable room for the development of IR arrays and mosaic-cameras.
With a truly wide-field IR camera, the scientific life of CFHT as an independent, front-line research facility could be extended beyond the end of the next decade.

CNRS - 25 candles for the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope
On September 28, 1979, the Canada-France-Hawaii telescope (CFHT) was inaugurated on one of the best observation sites in the Northern hemisphere, atop Mauna Kea, a 4,200-meter high volcano on the island of Hawaii (United States).
The sixth largest optical telescope in the world, with a diameter of 3.60 meters, the CFHT was the result of a tripartite agreement entered into four years earlier by Canada's National Research Council (CNRC), the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the University of Hawaii.
By contrast, the CFHT was designed from the outset to obtain a very large circular visual field with a diameter of nearly one degree, which is twice the apparent diameter of the full moon in the sky.

Since X-ray observations find rapid cosmic evolution in the intracluster medium and cluster postential well over similar timescales, the rapidly changing gas density and/or galaxy-galaxy interaction rate could be responsible for the rading of luminous AGNs in rich clusters (Stocke and Perrenod; Roos).

Bottom Line the CFHT Airmass Coeff's - The slope of the data in the airmass versus fluxscale plots agrees with the expected slope using the CFHT canonical value.
This trend can then be compared to the canonical CFHT airmass coefficient for the given filter to verify the correctness of the value.
A first attempt at this revealed a significant scatter in the offsets from sequence to sequence and revealed sequences that were clearly non-photometric, departing from the slope indicated by the canonical airmass coefficient.

ESA Science & Technology: Titan's surface From CFHT
Narrow band images were obtained first at wavelengths sensitive mostly to the emission from Titan's atmosphere (1.18 microns J2, 1.64 microns H2), then in bands where both atmospheric and surface emissions contribute (1.29 microns J1, 1.6 microns H1).
The presence of such a compound in equatorial regions could be related to the presence of a high mountain range.
