In the CFL a team hypothetically could make the playoffs with a record of 3 games under.500.
The CFL desperately needs to remedy this situation and the solution is quite simple: follow the format that is already put in place by the CFL's younger and more much successful brother, the National Football League.
I mean the CFL expanded south to the US a few years ago in attempt to become a minor league form of football to the NFL.

Speros hoped to enlist the support of local government & business to keep the Stallions in Baltimore, but was unsuccessful and elected to move the team to Montreal (where they became the new Montreal Alouettes), after the CFL decided to disband all the other American teams.
Baltimore was the most succesful of the American teams, setting a record their first season for most wins by a first-year team.
They were eventually succesful in their suit, so Baltimore was known as the Baltimore CFL's for a time.

The Memphis Mad Dogs, ended the 1995 CFL season with a 9-9-0 regular season record, which placed them in fourth place of the Southern Division, causing them to miss the play-offs in their only season of existence in the CFL.
Due to the fact that they had lost revenue and had low attendance, the Memphis Mad Dogs were forced to fold after the 1995 season, marking the end of the franchise and the CFL's unfortunate three years, south of the border.
On a positive note, the Mad Dogs were known for their strong defensive work that was rated second, behind Edmonton, in the CFL for giving up the least amount of points with 364, due in large part to the strong defensive play of Tim Cofield and Rodney Harding.

Despite the playoff disappointment, there were many highlights in 1998, especially the emergence of Derrell Mitchell as one of the best receivers in Argo history following his CFL record 160-reception season and all-star berth, along with Paul Masotti passing Darrell K. John Avery has already made his mark in the CFL when he played for the Edmonton Eskimos in 2002, rushing 229 times for 1448 yards and 9 touchdowns, becoming the only first year CFL player to ever rush for more than 1400 yards.
In 1998, Avery was a first round draft pick (29th overall) for the Miami Dolphins where he earned a Dolphins single season record for combined yards in his rookie season with 1655 yards.
Avery completed a brief stint with the Dallas Cowboys in 2001 before joining the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos in 2002.
