138 F/A-18 Hornets were purchased in the early 1980's to replace the aging fleet of fighters that Canada was operating at the time; the CF-101 Voodoo in the NORAD alert role / the CF-116 Freedom Fighter in the light attack role and the CF-104 Starfighter in the NATO attack and recon role in Germany.
The first CF-18's arrived in Canada during 1982 and the last delivered in 1988, in all 98 single seat "A" models and 40 dual seat trainer "B" models were ordered.

In 1995, The Canadian Forces Air Command announced that a further 12 CF-188 s would be withdrawn from active service and placed into ready reserve storage.
Canadian officers looked at several different fighter designs, but very rapidly the primary competitors for the Canadian order narrowed down to the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon and the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.
The first Canadian Armed Forces unit to be equipped with the CF-18 was the No 410 "Cougar" Operational Training Squadron based at Cold Lake, Alberta, this unit receiving its first planes on October 30, 1982.

Today the CF-18 is going through a major Mid-Life Upgrade (MLU) which will see cutting edge technology installed into the aircraft that will make it a viable platform until the year 2015 when Canada will/may have the CF-35, the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) as the next and possibly the last manned Canadian fighter.

After lunch, cadets proceeded to the flight line for static displays, including a CC-130 Hercules, CP-140 Aurora, CC-150 Airbus, CF-188 Hornet, CH-124 Sea King, CH-146 Griffon, CH-113 Labrador, CT-142 Dash 8, CT-155 Hawk, CT-156 Harvard II, and a variety of equipment.
The afternoon concluded with a short flying display including the CC-130 Hercules, CH-113 Labrador, CP-140 Aurora and the CF-18.
Members of the various air force military occupations manned displays to showcase and discuss their respective occupations with the cadets.

 CFB Greenwood - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Together with CFB Gander and CFB Goose Bay, CFB Greenwood is presently being used as a forward deployment base for CF-188 Hornet fighter/interceptor aircraft rotating in from CFB Bagotville as part of NORAD's post-9/11 response to concerns about civilian airline security along North America's east coast.
In 1991 the base was closed and the majority of military personnel were transferred to CFB Greenwood, with Summerside's only operational unit, 413 Squadron (successor to No. 103 RU) moving its CH-113 Labrador and CC-115 Buffalo aircraft on June 10, 1991; the Buffalo were replaced by the CC-130 Hercules shortly after 413 transferred.
To alleviate further overcrowding at CFB Greenwood, 103 RU was moved to CFB Summerside.

The base has now witnessed four generations of fighter aircraft, and the future looks promising as as the military looks forward to the CF-188 hornet that are being received for front line service.
Cold Lake Sun — A proud 50-year history of CFB Cold Lake and the 80-year milestone of the Royal Canadian Air Force were celebrated April 3 at the JJ Parr sports complex with a gala mixed mess dinner.
Among the 660 guests enjoying the baked salmon loin, prime rib and chocolate mousse cups on the menu were former Wing Commanders, MLA Denis Ducharme, and former air force members.

Singapore has also expressed interest in buying 18 F-16s, but is delaying a purchase decision until it completes an evaluation of the Hornet.
This choice was made before the Hornet had achieved IOC with any US service.
