Originally a troop carrier, the Huey got the job because it was smaller and more flexible and could unload troops faster, so the Chinook was used mainly to haul cargo, and it succeeded over the unusual CH-64 Skycrane, which required an external pod for internal storage.
That Chinook was practically brand new and an investigation found that a Speco-made gear installed by Boeing had cracks in it.
The army is spending an estimated $8 million to replace 143 sets of gears on the Chinook.
