CHKDSK - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CHKDSK (command shortening of Checkdisk) is a command in DOS and Microsoft Windows systems which verifies a hard disk or a floppy disk for file system integrity.
When used under Windows with the /F or the /R parameter, CHKDSK usually cannot run immediately, because there are open files on the disk.
Under Windows, CHKDSK can be run both from a console window, as a command with flags and from My Computer application using visual interface.

 DOS Command: CHKDSK
By using the /F option, you tell CHKDSK to find any of these parts of files or programs that have become separated from the rest of the file, to create a new file for each, and to write the lost segment to these files.
If CHKDSK finds lost clusters (parts of files or programs that have become separated from the rest of the file) it will write the lost segment to new files and provide the filename FILEnnnn (nnnn will be a number starting with 0000).
The first four lines of this display refer to the disk you specified: they indicate the total disk space (the storage capacity of the disk), the number of hidden (system) files stored on the disk, the number of user files stored on the disk, and the amount of storage space still remaining to be used.

 about chkdsk
Chkdsk is a very time consuming process, especially on large hard drives.
Because chkdsk is a separate, "external" program, you have to copy chkdsk.exe to the floppy after you format it.
I'd type in chkdsk E:/r (for example) and instead of the 3 step process, it would do a 5 step process in that it checks the file data and the free space in addition to the partition,, file structures, indexes and security descriptors.

"Chkdsk /f" forces Chkdsk to run whether or not the flag is dirty--- it's a way to ensure that errors are fixed, regardless of what the flag says.
"Chkdsk /x" goes a little further and helps ensure that any files that were left open get closed; it actually implies "/f" so you don't need the /f if you're using /x.

Chkdsk Error Recovery. Recover hard disks involving Scandisk and Chkdsk Error in Windows 98/NT/2000/XP/2003
Programs such as Scandisk, Chkdsk and Fsck are software utilities that are designed to find different types of errors and correct some file system errors on hard disks.
Among other things, Scandisk checks the disk platters for defects and also looks for lost clusters that are sometimes created when a program aborts.
As mentioned in the above paragraph, Scandisk, Chkdsk and Fsck are software utilities that are designed to correct file system errors on hard disks.

Yes, chkdsk from the Recovery Console only has the /p and /r options available, where /p has the functionality of /F from the Command Prompt chkdsk, and /r is equivalent to /R from the Command Prompt chkdsk (actually, letter case doesn't matter in any of these switches as far as I know).
