	CHUM Limited - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		CHUM began in 1945 with a single AM radio station in Toronto.
		Although CHUM's radio holdings tend to retain traditional formats, their television stations reflect the avant garde philosophy of former senior executive Moses Znaimer, who turned his hip, local style of television broadcasting into an image as perhaps Canada's most flamboyantly visible media titan in the 1980s and 1990s.
		Due to competition concerns, CHUM sold Craig's CKXT (known as "Toronto 1") to TVA and Sun Media, in exchange for $46 million in cash and Sun's 29.9% share in the Toronto news service CablePulse24, which is now wholly owned by CHUM, effective December 2.

		This state of affairs effectively tells any AM STEREO capable radio not to turn the stereo decoder circuitry on, since it "looks" (or rather listens) for a pilot tone and when it doesn't find one, it "concludes" that the signal is monophonic.
		The SONY SRF series units and Metrosound AMS 400 overcome the lack of the 25 Hz pilot tone by using a "forced stereo" mode (when manually set in the AM STEREO position) which has the effect of treating all AM stations received as being "in stereo" whether or not they actually are.
		This does not make reception of a normally mono AM station in stereo possible, but it does allow you to receive stereo broadcasts of stereo stations that are not putting out the pilot tone for some reason.
