CJNT-TV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CJNT is a multicultural television station in Montreal, Quebec owned by CanWest Global.
It planned to relaunch CJNT on the model of Canada's first multicultural station, CFMT in Toronto, with 60% ethnic content and 40% American content.
CanWest had CJNT file bankruptcy, and changed its conditions of licence to reduce the ethnic content to 60%.

 CJNT (CH)
CJNT broadcasts on cable 14 and UHF 62, although the over the air signal is quite poor.
CJNT has only been around since 1997, although you could argue that TEQ (la télévision ethnique du Québec, logo at right) was its predecessor long before that.
CJNT would eventually be sold to CFCF which wanted to turn it into a "Rogers-style" ethnic channel, like CFMT Toronto, with only 60% local-ethnic content, mixed in with American shows (40%).

After CJNT opened in 1997, its committment to ethnic groups and its finances were questioned, especially late at night, when they would frequently show an infomercial for a psychic hotline -- in English.
In 2001, Canwest Global acquired CJNT, after the latter declared bankrupcy (because of financial problems, they were on the air in the afternoon and evening hours only).
CJNT airs the most local and Canadian shows in Canada (apart from what's on the CBC and Radio-Canada).

Plug Pulled on Local Black TV
CJNT replaces Television of Ethnic Quebec (TEQ) which was operated by cable giant Videotron and carried programs from almost every cultural group in the province.
Marie Griffiths, president of CJNT, in a recent interview with the Montreal Gazette is quoted as saying that many of the programs that have been dropped by the new channel were left out because they could not meet the standards of a commercial station.
However, between the time the application process started and the commencement of programming the new CJNT management had changed their position and were telling the producers that there were no guarantees of inclusion.
