CKGM (AM) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CKGM was founded by Geoff Stirling and opened on December 7, 1959.
CKGM got a record-high number of listeners among English-language stations in Montreal according to the Fall 1976 BBM ratings that were released on December 13 of that year, thanks in part to the large numbers of Francophones who listened to the station (almost 40% of CKGM listeners were French-speaking).
CKGM became the radio flagship of the Montreal Expos a few days later, marking a return of baseball on English-language airwaves.

CKGM was first granted the move to 990 kHz and power increase to 50,000 watts, on July 18, 1983.
CKGM was given approval to operate a transitional digital radio undertaking from a transmitter on Mont Royal, using the EUREKA-147 digital audio broadcasting system.

CKGM is fighting with CBC for last place since they carry network programming which is inexpensive but not relevent to Montreal in any way.
The first thought was to use the former CKGM 980 kHz transmitter and re-tune it to 800 kHz.
Effective at midnight on Sunday, January 25, CKGM would cease its regular programming and CJAD would begin broadcasting on 990 kHz until such time as the CJAD antenna towers had been rebuilt and the 800 kHz transmitter was again operational.

CHOM-FM - the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
It was put on the air in 1963 as CKGM-FM, initially simulcasting the programming of its AM sister, 980 CKGM, at the time.
It became an album-oriented rock station in 1969, and it dropped the CKGM-FM branding in favour of CHOM in 1971.
In 2002 it was purchased by Standard Broadcasting, thus divorcing it from its lifetime AM sister station, 990 CKGM, owned by CHUM Limited.

CKGM switches to "Lite Rock, Less Talk" (later to become "Favourites of Yesterday and Today") thus, dropping the Top 30 /40 /50 hit music the station had become largely identified with by Montrealers and legions beyond since 1959.

But my love for pop music started at a very your age listenning to 980 CKGM on the AM dial when I lived in Brossard.
CKGM was my favouritew radio station, and were known for their Top 30 countdowns, and also had them in print weekly in the Montreal Gazette.
Well the CKGM list inspired me to do those, and I have been lucky to find a 1983 Top 30 chart that I saved in my yearbook.

CKGM went through a prolonged series of death throes in the 1980s, flipping to AC, then returning to top 40 as CHTX, "980 Hits." And on September 14, 1990, CHTX moved to 990, increasing its power to 50,000 watts from a new transmitter site far south of Montreal at Ville-de-Mercier.
While the national "Team" format is now dead, CKGM has carried on with it - and it's far and away the lowest-rated English-language signal on the Montreal dial.
As a stopgap, it was somewhat mediocre; the 1410 signal is notoriously bad to the west, which meant that the Anglophone target community on the West Island had a lot of trouble hearing CJAD on its new frequency.

Bucking the usual trend of dead Canadian AM towers, the facility appears to have remained standing for several years -- long enough to be re-used for the new CJMS licensee to take advantage of the new facility.
I think that CKGM had four towers here; you will note the extra doghouse next to the leftmost tower, and we saw what looked like another tower's worth of steel on the ground nearby.

CHUM Group officials are making no promises that the low-rated talk format will return to CKGM once the CJAD lease is over; the CKGM facility has been troubled by low ratings and frequent format changes ever since dropping its CHR format, changing calls to CKIS, and moving off 980 kHz in the late 1980s.
