In the nineties, CKMI became merely a repeater station of CBC Montreal, carrying almost all of its programs including "Newswatch." The only exception was a local program called "Inside Quebec" which aired four nights a week at 7 pm.
In 1997, when CKMI became a regional network and switched from CBC to Global, they gave the channel 5 broadcast frequency in the Quebec City area over to the CBC, with the CRTC’s blessing.
CKMI Global programming is now seen on channel 20 with repeater stations in Montreal and Sherbrooke on channel 46 and 11, respectively.

CKMI's schedule in the 1980's was full of Global shows, and it was carried on cable in Montreal.
When CFCF began airing the Global schedule in the early 90's, the Montreal cable systems stopped carrying CKMI, as it had ceased all Global broadcasts, becoming a full repeater of CBMT in the process.
When CKMI officially went Global in 1997, it took essentially all of the network's programs back from CFCF, and it added a terrestrial repeater in Montreal, reappearing on Montreal cablesystems as a result.

A selection from a decade of visits to tower and studio sites in the Northeast and beyond
For many years, this was operated locally under the CKMI calls, but a few years ago channel 5 became a full relay of Montreal's CBMT under the calls CBVE-TV.
The CKMI license, meanwhile, ended up in the hands of Global, which signed on a new English-language transmitter on channel 20.
CKMI in Quebec is the nominal primary station for two relays in Montreal (channel 46) and Sherbrook (channel 11), but nearly all the viewership for Global Quebec is on those relay transmitters.

It should be recalled that during the licensing hearings, Global talked repeatedly about making CKMI the headquarters of its Québec network.
At the time, they promised to hire 75 people as soon as the station opened, the majority of whom would be located in Québec City.

CanWest Global has quietly abandoned operations at its -- and I say this with tongue in cheek -- Quebec city-based English-language station, CKMI.
Ever since it, in partnership with the private French-language TVA, took over the CBC affiliate in the Quebec provincial capital in the mid-90s, Global has been incrementally shifting CKMI's production operations to Montreal where the audience and advertisers are.
But CKMI was licensed to Quebec city, with promises to spread Canadian programming from the west to the people of the other solitude.

Broadcaster adds inaccurate statements to broken promises QUEBEC CITY, le 12 sept. /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Union of the Public Employees (CUPE-FTQ) deplores the fact that the management of Global Television is misleading the community and the media in describing production activities at its Québec City station, CKMI.
As for the of 20.5 hours of "local" production, contrary to all the promises made to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), it actually originates in Montreal and not in Québec City.
After the transfer of production to Toronto, presumably on September 26, Global will have no more than 8 fulltime employees and one half-time employee at CKMI in Québec City- a far cry from their projected target.
