That attitude was rudely shaken in 1812 when the HMS Guerre (38) was destroyed by the USS Constitution (44), the HMS Macedon (49) captured by the USS United States (44) and the HMS Java (44) taken by the USS Constitution.
Captain Harold Fitz, of the USS Santa Fe, rammed his cruiser into the Franklin's starboard hull to take aboard the carrier's wounded and aid in fighting fires on the hangar and flight decks.
Stationed on the third deck when the ship was rocked by a series of violent explosions set off in her own ready bombs, rockets and ammunition by the hostile attack, Lieutenant Gary unhesitatingly risked his life to assist several hundred men trapped in a messing compartment filled with smoke, and with no apparent egress.

 Archives :: Vincennes Sun-Commercial Online ::
Navy Lt. Brian Cook, supply officer aboard the current USS Vincennes, a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser (CG-49), said the city may be able to obtain the silver after the ship is decommissioned on June 29, and gave the city a Navy contact in Pennsylvania with whom to begin the process.
The silver service the people of Vincennes gave to the heavy cruiser USS Vincennes (CA-44) nearly 70 years ago may soon reside in Vincennes City Hall - at least until needed again by a future USS Vincennes.
It was first presented to the heavy cruiser, but removed and placed in storage before she entered combat, which was why the silver was not lost when she was sunk by Japanese fire on Aug. 9, 1942, off Guadalcanal, the night after the Marine Corps invasion.
