  The Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation
It was soon determined that the radiation was diffuse, emanated unifromly from all directions in the sky, and had a temperature of approximately 3 Kelvin (2.73K).
Initially, the two young scientists were berefit of a satisfactory explanation for their observations, and considered the possibility that the CMB may have been due to some undetermined systematic noise.
Usually the features of the Universe and the CMB are interpreted in the context of a cosmological model - The Big Bang - which is derived from general cosmological principles and observations.

This lab involves using maps of the CMB to estimate the curvature of space.
The CMB is light which comes to us from the "surface of the cosmic fireball".
This leads to an amazing fact: if we can measure the brightness pattern of the CMB over the sky we are actually measuring the density of the Universe on a spherical shell around where Earth is now as it was 380,000 years after the big bang.

WMAP Cosmology 101: Cosmic Microwave Background   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The existence of the CMB radiation was first predicted by George Gamow in 1948, and by Ralph Alpher and Robert Herman in 1950.
Today, the CMB radiation is very cold, only 2.725° above absolute zero, thus this radiation shines primarily in the microwave portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, and is invisible to the naked eye.
The behavior of CMB photons moving through the early universe is analogous to the propagation of optical light through the Earth's atmosphere.

Fluctuations in the CMB are evidence for the first clumping of matter particles - the seeds of the galaxies that we see today.
Measuring the polarization of the CMB is a direct measure of the dynamics of the early universe.

BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | Map reveals strange cosmos
The radiation that we detect as the CMB comes from a time when the Universe was less than half a million years old; from the so-called recombination era when hydrogen atoms formed in the cooling, expanding fireball of the Big Bang.
The expected variations in the CMB's intensity turned out to be so hard to detect that it was only in 1992 that they were first seen - variations of about a few parts per million on scales of the same angular diameter as the apparent diameter of the Moon.
The variations in the CMB contain information about the formation of the galaxies, the composition of the Universe and its fate.

 Cosmic Microwave Background - Introduction
In fact the CMB spectrum is a fl body to better than 1% accuracy over more than a factor of 1000 in wavelength.
By the early 1970's it became clear that the CMB sky is hotter in one direction and cooler in the opposite direction, with the temperature difference being a few mK (or about 0.1% of the overall temperature).
The pattern of this temperature variation on the sky is known as a "dipole", and is exactly what is expected if we are moving through the background radiation at high speed in the direction of the hot part.

 BOOMERanG CMB FACT SHEET
When we look at the CMB, we are looking back billions of years, to a time before the first stars and galaxies were formed, when the universe was only a few hundred thousand years old.
The CMB, which is virtually uniform in all directions, presents a spectrum that cannot be attributed to any source other than a hot, uniform, dense early universe.
Thus the CMB is a link between the hot, smooth early universe and the cool, lumpy, 10 to 15 billion year old universe of today.

 CMB Program at Caltech
The Caltech Initiative in Computational Molecular Biology (CMB) is a novel effort supporting training and research at the interface between the Biological and the Physical / Chemical / Computational sciences.
CMB is directed towards the iterative, integrated, closed-loop application of quantitative modeling and methods to laboratory experiments on complex problems in molecular biology -- an approach more typically employed in the physical sciences.
A central motivation is that this interplay between theoretical models and actual laboratory research will not only engender new experimental tools and techniques for the pursuit of molecular biology, but also provide new avenues for understanding interacting biological systems and subsystems.

The CMB is composed of a bath of photons which were emitted following the big bang when the universe was still extremely hot and dense - so hot and dense that all the matter and radiation was bound together in a photon-baryon fluid.
The baryons then proceeded to gravitationally collapse into potential wells formed by the denser regions initiating the formation of the first stars and galaxies while the photons were left to travel essentially inimpeded ever since, cooling with the expansion of the universe.
The way in which these inhomogeneities (anisotropy in the CMB) are distributed on the sky gives us insight into how the universe came to be what we observe today.
