  Enterprise CMDB
Chief among this is that a true enterprise CMDB solution has to dust of an old database concept that is a bit out of style—dimensional modeling.
The CMDB has to be able to visibly display its data in ways that let humans use the information in impact assessments for Change Management, privilege determination at the Service Desk, troubleshooting by Incident or Problem Management, and dozens of other ad hoc inquiries from all over IT.
An enterprise CMDB is not a singular database, it is a complex system that has to federate other data stores, reconcile alternate views of the same data, detect unauthorized changes, synchronize approved changes with its own metadata store, and be able to dynamically represent configurations graphically on demand.

A sample of 0.01 gram of CMDB propellant is placed in the cup of the calorimeter which is maintained at a constant temperature of 140.degree.
CMDB propellants are prepared as in Example 1 utilizing 1-methoxy-3-phenoxybenzene, an alkoxy substituted aromatic stabilizer of this invention, as the stabilizer, and utilizing 1,3-bis(N-m-methoxyphenyl urethane) benzene as a stabilizer for control purposes.

Asset Management Software and CMDB - Altiris, Inc.
This limits its value to other parts of the business, such as operations and IT services, and can lead to silos and turf wars over which group owns what processes and data, and diminished returns.
By combining the IT asset management repository with the CMDB, and further integrating the tools that IT uses to manage systems and implement change, asset management becomes something that everyone is participating in, whether they know it or not.
Not only can you have metrics that will help you prioritize projects and demonstrate the business value of keeping IT in-house, IT staff will have the data they need to understand how a given device is currently configured, what it's related to, and perhaps whether or not it's under warranty.

Assuming that approval is given, the CMDB needs to be updated with the original change (add video conferencing to workstation) and the additional changes required to support it (move workstation to new network segment).
To make sure that the CMDB takes account of this delay and accurately reflects the state of an IT component, the CMDB must be updated at least twice for every change—once when the change is first approved and again, when it has been completed.
When defining the CMDB management processes and procedures, the configuration manager needs to establish appropriate control mechanisms to ensure that the information recorded in the CMDB by the configuration management staff is accurate and complete.

A CMDB is not simply an asset repository, Andrew said; it added much more on the relationships between hardware and software assets, applications and the business tasks they served, the people that made those tasks work and the standards to which they were supposed to work.
Where there was an affective repository of information in a particular area, the CMDB would link to it, creating a "federated" source of all pertinent information.

Taking the Configuration Management Database to the Next Level: The Federated Data Model
The concept of a CMDB has evolved over the years from a collection of isolated data stores to integrated data stores to a single, central database.
This federated approach to a CMDB offers a single, common set of information on each configuration item and its relationships with other configuration items in a manner that can be leveraged by all relevant IT processes -- creating cost-saving synergy among different service management functions.
These are the CMDB itself; related data linked to or from the CMDB, called the CMDB Extended Data; and applications that interact with these two layers, called the CMDB Environment.

Enterprise Systems | Is CMDB the Key to IT Service Management?
CMDB is a repository for storing information about the attributes of configuration items (CIs), changes to these items, and their corresponding relationships and dependencies.
Further, while the CMDB will ultimately become the central information point for all IT domains, each domain will need to continue to maintain detailed information specific to its element or service, and needs are likely to vary across domains.
When automated and populated with fully accurate information, a CMDB represents each element within the context of other elements in an IT service, creating a topology and dependency map of the infrastructure that results in higher service levels, reduced downtime, and the ability to effect change more efficiently.

Federated CMDB proposed as answer to ITIL driver - Computer Business Review
While the notion of the CMDB is true to ITIL, it is often loosely interpreted when it comes to the build and implementation phase.
According to the survey findings, most CMDBs are updated infrequently, with 48% of respondents saying they update the CMDB monthly or even less frequently, and only 21% updating their information either daily or in real time.
An accurate and valid CMDB is essential if IT is to move from simple silo-based management to more complex business-oriented services management.

 erp4it: A CMDB rant
To the extent that ITIL and ITSM specify the CMDB as the container of this topology, I object to current CMDB vendor practice and advocate a standards-based approach.
The major premise I have is that 30 years of data management, the development of the relational model, entity-relationship modeling, and object-oriented class modeling, needs to be reflected in current CMDB practice.
More precisely, the DBMS engines themselves are based on any to any semantics with declarative constraints, and the whole point of data modeling is to use this generality as a basis for building sensible, problem-domain oriented models.
