CMFBoard can also be used to override the default discussions functionality available for Plone objects, see 'plone setup' for the option.
CMFBoard is highly configurable, the quickest way to limit or expand permissions on a forum discussion is the change the 'state' of the object.

Another CMFBoard user, stuck on Plone 2.0.5 because there is no upgrade path for CMFBoard, has already developed a migration tool so that you can retain all of your CMFBoard content in Ploneboard.
CMFBoard served us well for a while, but as our site grew (we're now more than 14,000 members) it became increasingly evident that we'd need a different solution.
Upgrading to Plone 2.1.x, with Zope 2.8.x, promises to solve the ZODB problems, but CMFBoard is not compatible with the most recent Plone/Zope iterations.

We would like to help these users migrate to Plone 2.1.2 which has more and improved features, but CMFBoard is a showstopper as people have invested time in posts written on these forums and they can't just be deleted.
The scripts that are created will not retain all of the properties from CMFBoard, but we will be able to convert the most important parts, the forums and the postings.
CMFBoard has given us many headaches in the past, but there is a need for a forum solution, so something that works has to be built..

Then CMFBoard subscription stuff was broken as CMFBoard 2.1.4 won't work with AT 1.3.x.
FWIW the subscription problem is not so much CMFBoard but PortalTransport that has the problem with AT 1.3.x.

Many web developers take the opposite approach that we have: they make their site look and act like phpBB (i.e., function follows form, i.e., does not work).
CMFBoard is the closest I have found, that works with Plone, to the standard functionality offered by the others.
So, if you have any thoughts about what CMFBoard does or does not do well, or at all, let me know.

Actually, while I think a large number of Ploneboard users will be CMFBoard converts, a much larger number of users will be comparing CMFBoard to phpbb, and thus my initial draft spec was to make it easier for that set of users to adopt it (or at least look at Ploneboard as an alternative).

Portal - SDK Site and Distributers' Sites
The site uses alot of SQL Server calls, which can be moved to the ZODB, but may not be worth the effort; we could have plone access the SQL Server database instead..
The distributers' sites are now being developed by Yuli in ASP, though she's currently holding off until we determine if these should actually be in plone or ASP.The advantage of ASP is, in the short term, development is much quicker.
Distributers can then work quite independently, just adding content to the site, either uploading Word,.pdf or html files, or entering content using EPOZ.
